first time being first responder

Kinda had a shocker on this mornings commute to work... heading up rt. 18 on the south shore some guy must have fallen asleep and hit the sign at Ecco trattoria across from the weymouth air base. Must have happened 30 secs before I came upon it, guy hit the sign head on and flipped his jetta. Engine was a good 30 ft. away from the rest of the car. Made my way up to the car and the guy undid his seat belt and came crashing down about when myself and a few other guys got over to the car. we got the door open for him and pulled him out. and the guy actually tried to walk away. Can't believe he had nothing more than a few scratches on him. Police showed up and started questioning the guy and thats when I left. Still kinda frazzled thinking about how he managed to end up like he did

thats crazy my buddy lives about 2 seconds down the road.... street is very busy glad he didnt take out anyone else ...

yep happened about 5:30am.... damn straight about the jetta besides the whole front end missing the interior looked completely intact. The guy only had a few scratches from what I could tell.

VW's in general are safe. My wife survived a head on with a drunk guy going the wrong way on a freeway at night (i.e. near 100 mph impact!). Her car a new GTI was totaled as expected but she only received bruises and scratches (very lucky), he was hospitalized. We haven't driven anything other than a VW since.

What is it with those things? My niece hit a gurad rail and an embankment doing about 50 or so (so SHE says, but the cops concurred) a couple of years back in a VW Cabriolet, and that car tore itself apart and the engine was found on the other side of the mound. She f'd up her back and neck, but ok otherwise..

They must figure a car torn apart absorbed the energy better than one that's whole afterward, but jeez, to have to take a hike to find the engine?

I hear ya, maybe its to avoid the engine getting jammed back into the passenger compartment... telling ya the inside of the car was not too badly damaged from what I could see, considering what had just happened. Really regret not snapping a picture before leaving. I'll try to get a picture of the sign on my way home today.

for example: a vehicle traveling at 60mph hits an identical vehicle traveling at 40mph head on. the passengers in each car would both experience a deceleration equivalent to hitting a stationary object at 50mph.

variations in mass and the crumple zone length of each vehicle model will affect the actual deceleration impact on the passengers inside.

Nah, hitting another car head on at a 100mph closing speed is equal to hitting a tree or a brick wall that doesn't move at 50mph....

Congrats on having a good first responder experience. It is amazing what modern safety equipment can accomplish when properly utilized. There are way too many drivers that continue to drive without seat belts. Those accidents can get ugly.
