Hey so yesterday i was driving out to Rochester, NY to visit a buddy on i-90. My detector didn't go off and i got bagged by a NY statey doing 77 in a 65. Now he gave me the "ticket" and said to fill out part of it and mail it in. Thing is there is no actual fine listed on the ticket? It just has a space for my info and to check if i want to plead guilty or not guilty, kinda at a loss to that. Anyone have experience with tickets in NY? Im planning to plead innocent and fight it, but i gotta drive three hours out to Utica NY to fight the damn thing.

Let us know how it goes. On my way home from the IMS in NYC, long story but basically it was either stop and be rear ended, or speed up for the yellow, so I blew a yellow light that I guess turned red, cause we saw 2 flashes in quick succession, I can only assume we will get nice pictures from the front and rear of the car. Anyone know what that one is gonna set me back?

Just log onto DMV NY and and put in your ticket number and you can find out how much you have to send in,you can pay your fine there aswell.

can't. That only works for traffic violations within NYC, Rochester NY, and a few other big cities where a special bureau handles tickts, mine was in nowhere so i have regular traffic court

I have had plenty of experince with state troopers and local around albany..I found out that your best bet is to find a lawyer, pay the $200 or $250 fee, he will take it from there. somthing like that will get about $100 court cost with minimal points maybe 1,, possible parking on pavement.. in the long run it's cheaper up front, and insurance wise. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT ! Ny imposed a driver pionts assesment. .wich means the dmv will atach a SEPERATE fine for any pionts. court does not have anything to do with this .if you do not pay . they do revoke driving privlages.even if pionts don't cross state line the DMV will lean on your licence..2 pionts is $150 ..11 pionts around $525 with 6 month susp. Call your local or regular lawyer to see if they can recomend someone in the area.. I'm in albany if I can help pm.me..Good luck

Ny. State troppers have the instant on radar. like pull the trigger type.where locals , city, sheriff, and forest ranger police ( yes I got a speed ticket from a forrest ranger ) radar is always on so your your radar detector will go off in time., p.s. those radar's can shoot multiple targets in multiple directions at the same time. State police get their stuff calibrated more often than any other police (have tried every angle)..even if he used some other way to get yur speed, they pride themselves on how well they have been trained ...

Radar detectors are tools to let you know when you are caught. Save your money and take the chance.
I'd recommend not just paying the ticket (edit to clarify: FIGHT IT!). I got a ticket for 111 in a 65 in NY on I-90 as well. I fought it and got it knocked down to 76 in a 65 and the fine was still $300. That's a lot of money especially at "just" 11 over! Since you're from MA you won't get any points from a NY ticket, we don't share info.

I got a ticket months ago on the Mass/NY border. The cop said he caught me going 82 in a 65. THe $ amount was not on the ticket either. I pleaded not guilty, went to court in Chatham NY, got it reduced to a "parking" ticket. $100.00
Keep in mind there is an $80.00 surcharge on top of that amount for your ticket...ouch.

You suck at life. Why don't you quit?
My dad told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up. So I became an Asshole.
It might depend on the town/city...not sure if it's all thru the NY state, but I know that where I got caught, they give you that surcharge on every traffic violation. Here close by to home, in Westfield, I believe you get a $35 surcharge on any traffic violation. It's the "new" trend...you know, they say it helps pay for the gas they put in their police cars.![]()

Upstate NY is a really shitty place to get a ticket. The state police there have turned ticket-writing into a major source of revenue. Ask me how I know...
Here's how it works. The reason your ticket does not have a fine listed is because it's not determined until you send in your plea. If you plead guilty or no contest, the court in whatever town you got the ticket in will process your plea and send back a fine, which will comprise the points (4 points for your 12-mile-over ticket) plus the monetary fines (whatever the court decides, plus a surcharge for the town, and if you accumulate 6 points or more within an 18-month period, the NY DMV assesses an additional surcharge of $300 plus $75 for each additional point beyond 6 points, spread out over three years, whether you're a NY resident or not). Failure to pay any of this will result in license suspension, which crosses over state lines whether your state has a reciprocity agreement with NY or not.
A ticket for 12 miles over the limit will probably not be expensive enough to make it worth hiring a lawyer. My guess is it'll come to around $200 and 4 points. If that's worth the 260-mile drive, you can always try fighting it in person, but from what I hear state troopers have been pretty serious for the past few years about making their court appearances (again, ticket writing is major revenue). You might be able to work out a reduced fine though.
I got my ticket outside of Ticonderoga, NY, in June of 2006, in my car at 11pm. Cop claimed I was doing 86 in a 55, and he wrote me up for an additional ticket for allegedly failing to dim my high-beams. He said he was oncoming, but there was no oncoming traffic; I think he was hiding on the side of the road and wrote me up for the high-beams just because he could (he also made me get out of the car and breathalyzed me and was visibly disappointed when I passed). The combination of the two tickets would have totalled 10 points and up to about $1500 in fines, so I hired a lawyer. He charged me $400 and got the high-beams ticket thrown out and the speeding ticket reduced to the equivalent of rolling through a stop sign (2 points). Well worth the money in this case.
Now whenever I ride or drive in NY, I make a point of not speeding excessively. On the NY State Thruway, I typically set my cruise control at 69mph. Also, I bought a Valentine 1 radar detector -- it's not 100% effective in NY due to the use of instant-on radar, but it really helps increase situational awareness in general.

Figured i let you all know i plead guilty and my ticket arrived today. Its a $90 speeding ticket with the previously mentioned $85 state service fee lol.

The entire state of NY sucks big time.
When you get the fine for points (and you will once you send in for the ticket), read the paperwork carefully. The wording suggests that your NY state drivers license will be suspended if the points aren't paid for. Funny thing is, you don't have a NY state driver's license........see where I'm going with this?
