Anyone know of a good site for download instructions etc. for a
Garmin Oregon 300
Software etc for uploading to a microSD of the .img files.
I have not absolutely ruled out buying the topo 24 of the Northeast but the dvd is like $100 and I would at least try to do something else.
Got Garmin mapsource and free topo maps of everything just no lables good for now
Do you have the free topo maps loaded in Mapsource?
If so, you should be able to upload them from there to the Oregon. I think. I'm on a Mac, and Garmin's Mac software is a little different -- the mapping app is called Road Trip and is a bit more limited than MapSource, and the missing functionality is split up among a few additional apps, such as MapInstall. I'm pretty sure that MapSource includes the map installation functions, but if not, there's obviously got to be a PC version of MapInstall.
Point is, just use the appropriate software. The maps are usually made up of a shitload of little tiles, and you can select just the ones you want, or all of them. The software will then build the map image and upload it to the Oregon's internal memory or MicroSD card (you can specify either). This can take quite a long time, by the way, so don't get frustrated if it seems to get stuck.
Once the map has been uploaded, you may want to find it on the MicroSD card and change its file name (just make sure you leave the .img extension on the end). Mapsource/MapInstall always uses the same file name when it creates a map set, so if you don't change the file name, it will get overwritten next time you upload a new map set.
FYI, there's a lot of useful info in this thread on ADVrider:

And also on GPSfix.net.

thanks
I have everything except the 3d topo it says not enough elevation data for 3d
The map seems to be all USA though so that's happy
My only next deal was I tried to geocache but my point appeared on my map to be 20 feet into a lake rather than the dam.
Its stock reset is GPS not WAAS enabled so drift and accuracy was a lot Any idea why you would not want waas on all the time?
saying it was 2 ft then 50 feet but usually 20 to 24 seems to show me consistently west of map point.
I am going to use google earth and see if it is somehow consistent where I could make an offset.
I've heard the Oregon has some issues with WAAS. As for accuracy, though, I've found my Oregon to be extremely accurate, with very little drift, and that's with WAAS disabled.
Make sure you're running recent firmware. They just updated it to version 3.70, which actually has some bugs, so you may want to see if you can get the previous version, 3.60.
