I have a bunch of discounts and AAA is usually lowest - but they charge you if you go through their website. I usually use someplace like Travelocity to compare.

I always rent the tiniest car they offer - they almost never have it. They will try and sell you an upgrade at the desk, then if you won't cave they'll give you a larger car anyway.

We do the same thing on family trips. Minivan rentals are expensive, so we book a large sedan. Businessmen won't be caught dead in a minivan, and the sedans are often in short supply, so they wind up asking if we'll take a minivan at the same price as the sedan. Our family is five so if they don't, we're OK anyway.

I always use Priceline for rental cars and start bidding at about 50% to 75% of the lowest advertised rate. If someone bites, you can save quite a bit. Unlike using Priceline for hotels, there's very little left to chance, since you're renting a car of the same class, from the same location. It's usually worth a try. Even if the accepted offer isn't drastically lower than the advertised price, you still can end up saving something.

Give them PK as a reference. I think that will also get you a discount
