    Re: virus help

    try running AVG. I've had great success with it, even getting rid of a virus that Norton couldn't.

    http://free.avg.com/

    Edit: you can also try avast! if AVG doesn't work.

    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

    Both are completely free, but do require registration. I've never gotten any spam registering for either of them.

    Re: virus help

    1.) Do not use internet explorer
    2.) Run spybot search and destroy, ccleaner, and windows defender.

    If that doesn't work, format and re-install, lock your computer.

    hijack this is tricky if you are not aware of what is what. Free online scan @ trend housecall can help alot.
    Also Malware bytes has replaced adaware and spybot as the free malware scanner of choice.

    Re: virus help

    Wipe/reload. Only way to be sure. Lesson learned, password protect your PC.

    Or, install numerous programs that have the words "Spy" or "Ad" in them and get more crap on your PC without fixing a damn thing most of the time.

    Only programs that are free that I somewhat trust are Spybot: Search and Destroy (even though it loads the resident now which sucks, install it, run it, uninstall it once clean).

    AVG used to be better. Now they push so hard to get you to buy their fully licensed program that it hinders it's ability to function and update.

    Same here, except I'm using Symantec Endpoint 11.0 MR3 (new version of Corp Anti).

    If you get viruses simply because you are running IE, you are indeed a fucktard and should die in a fire.

    Re: A consolodated Computer Virus Help thread.

    Firefox is my personal favorite. There are a ton of handly plug-ins, including an amazing popup and ad blocker. I don't see any banners on most of the sites I visit daily. Its also got a plug-in that I got for work which will automatically open some webpages in an IE tab inside Firefox. For example, the remote Outlook my company uses doesn't look right in Firefox, so I have it programmed that every time I access the site, it automatically switches over to an IE tab.

    I haven't had a virus in about 4 or 5 years... but that's also because I don't download porn. I know that sounds stupid, but I was reading on cnet that 70 - 80% of viruses and spyware come from porn sites.

    I would be on firefox but kids play online games that only seem to work on ie then leave some bad cookie so I have to flush tem out usually with adaware and can pick up 150 "problems" a month.

    Tried Google chrome and had to laugh it was SLOW and couldn't run youtube at least on xp sp3

    I have mcaffe and they have a "maintenance" run that also finds some problems and its included

    Re: A consolodated Computer Virus Help thread.

    My dad has been having an issue with his new PC since yesterday afternoon.

    He tried downloading a how-to video on how to replace the fan belt on my car.

    it said that he needed an Active X control that he didn't have...

    He decided he didn't want to do that so he tried to close out the (unknown) website and the browser wouldn't close.

    Then he got a system-tray shield pop-up that said "you have a security problem".

    Now when you try to open Internet Explorer it comes up but immediately disappears.

    Also, if you just wait, dialog box alert pops up and asks you if you want to run a virus check. If you say "yes" then it tries to send you to a website: "helper-security.com" or "security-laboratory.com/blahblahblah".... but of course IE then closes down before it loads the website.

    So... my dad disconnected the PC from the internet just to make sure no personal info leaks out.... so we do some research from another PC... Internet posts at that McAfee website point him to malwarebyes.com.

    I downloaded malwarebytes and had it check the computer via the home network. It found 3 suspect files. Here's a copy of the log entry:

    Folders Infected:
    C:\Program Files\MyWaySA (Adware.MyWebSearch) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
    C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe (Adware.MyWebSearch) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

    Files Infected:
    C:\RECYCLER\ADAPT_Installer.exe (Heuristics.Malware) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

    Upon deleting those files he restarted the computer. We ran it again from my computer & it said his computer was clean... but it hasn't fixed the symptoms.

    We also ran AVG Free and came up with nothing.

    Any ideas? The PC didn't come with the installation CD's required for a re-format.

    *WARNING; playing in your registry can do serious harm. do only as instructed!

    (This fix obtained from http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfor...ssage.id=42143)

    Boot/reboot into Safe Mode

    Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove:
    MyWay (or MyWaySA)

    If you get a window to "Remove Share Component", click "Yes to All"

    If you get a window to "Remove Share File", click "Yes to All"

    Do NOT restart the computer when asked

    Go to Start, Find (or Search), Files or Folders; Look In should say Local Hard Drives
    Type MyWay (or MyWaySA) and hit Enter -- delete any instances found.

    Go to Start, Run, and type in (or copy and paste) MsiExec.exe /X{78d944d7-a97b-4004-ab0a-b5ad06839940}

    Click OK and follow the prompts to remove MyWay

    Go to Start, Run, type in regedit, and hit Enter

    Highlight My Computer

    Click Edit, Find, type in MyWay, and hit Enter. Delete anything found, press F3 to continue searching, deleting any/all found until the search is complete.

    Close all windows when finished and reboot normally.

    Just note that if you connect your system to a corporate domain, AVG keeps prompting you that the free license does not cover computers that connect to corporate networks.
