My bike only does mildly better than the Altima, but I will still be using it more, that's for sure.

that's cause you ride like a clown

I gotta fix the headlight on my bike and do some math to see whether it would make sense to put it back on the road and pay insurance.

bike, $350 for tires every 6000 miles vs cage $350 for tires every 80,000 miles buys a lot of gasoline

I still ride the bike, but don't pretend to think I'm saving money by doing it

Take-offs are free if you play your cards right I think last time I bought a set of tires was in 2007.

    He isn't wrong.

Still gonna commute on mine though. That's (part of why) I bought it.

    Re: gas prices

ha based on the amount insurance cost me a couple years ago and figuring $4/gallon it would take me over 4 years to make up that cost with the better fuel mileage of the bike driving to work. I live way to close to make it worth it.

    Re: gas prices

$130 for a set of Shinko tires on the KLR. Rear lasts about 6k, front I change every other rear.

    60mpg on average.

Still worth it. Probably not a very sound financial reason, but since I already own the bike and would ride anyways, commuting with it makes sense.

For me it's more like $250 or $300 every 8,000 miles, and my cage tires cost $800 and they only had like 30,000 miles on them (yay OEM low profile tires, new tires should last at least 50k). Suddenly the equation is a lot more balanced.

my time is worth $$ my tires don't go on for free

let's be realistic, bikes need maintenance more often, how many bikes go 100k between tunups or 15k between oil changes, how often do you change chain & sprockets on a car ?

why not alex? you a floater?

i've been cycling to work recently, pretty close to 60 mile round trip. that's a $10 savings every time i use the bike. i had to buy some better gear and lights, so it'll be a bit before i actually recoup some money, but the payoff in fitness alone is way worth it.

Pretty much this. A lot of people forget about the "little" things like suspension maintenance or even valve adjustments in the equation. People also need to factor in replacement costs for the bike into the equation as well. Start putting a ton of miles on the bike and it affects depreciaition. Eventually you'll want another bike and that cost should factor in as well. I'd bet the total costs involved make the decision more emotional rather than financial.

Computer on my truck is telling me 9.9 mpg. Can't move my tools and get materials without it though. Its getting damn criminal this pricing business. Haven't heard a legitimate reason yet cept for the money mongers playing puppeteer to some global crap. I'm getting bitter.
