Need a Nanny? Get a Pit Bull!

I found this blog today that shows a whole bunch of vintage photos of pit bulls being used for their original purpose: Babysitters!

    http://www.ywgrossman.com/photoblog/?p=676
    http://www.ywgrossman.com/photoblog/?p=1103

I know the perception of the breed will probably never change, but I love that there are still people out there who remember that these dogs are the #1 rated dog in terms of temperament to have around children

Only if I want my kid eaten. They're blood thirsty killing machines. I know cause the news told me.

I would never have one alone around my kids. Just the same as I would never leave them alone around a person I could not talk to to understand their feelings/personality/intentions. Let's see how you feel about it when you have your baby. I'm a dog lover but I don't trust ANY of them. Its not a pitbull thing.

Did you even read your own link? quoted from the 3rd paragraph, appears the retriever is #1:
In temperance tests (the equivalent of how many times your kid can poke your dog in the eye before it bites him) of all breeds the most tolerant was the Golden Retriever. The second most tolerant was the pit bull.
for someone so critical of others slight mis-steps while posting

and now for the other side of the story, they ain't all angels(and yes it could have been a rotti, sheppard, doberman but it was a pit):
    http://www.kctv5.com/story/15255135/...pregnant-woman

A man lost his wife and unborn child when his own pet pit bull attacked and killed them.

Greg Napora came home from work in Pacifica, CA, to the scene of his wife Darla's body and dog covered in blood.

bingo. I read that story and was horrified....and after you've been personally attacked by one and watched two of them try and bring down a horse....well, its hard to get that kind of imagery out of your head. Just the .02 from these eyes.

Re: Need a Nanny? Get a Pit Bull!

what about this? anyone hear about it? probably not because it wasnt a pitbull, the attack itself isnt as rare as they claim since small dogs are the worst about attacking and biting people, but because they are small and cute its ok.

If you buy a car, foreign or domestic, then beat on it and neglect it then it's gonna give you trouble. If you maintain it properly, odds are it's gonna function correctly. Yes there are exceptions to this.
    Same applies to dogs.

Re: Need a Nanny? Get a Pit Bull!

heres a long list of NON pitbull related attacks.
    http://www.understand-a-bull.com/Art...llDogsBite.htm

ANY dog can attack/bite, but pitbulls are the only headline news. its not fair. and breed specific legislation like that in colorado is rediculous. the UK put a ban on pitbulls thinking that dog attacks/bites would decrease if they got rid of this "menacing" breed, but after pit bull population SHARPLY decreased...attacks/bites stayed the same....imagine that.

Actually, as of 2011, 84.9% of Golden Retrievers passed the temperament test and 86.4% of APBTs passed it.... so, I stand by what I posted.

I've been attacked by a pit bull... actually I think it was half pit and half rottweiler.

It was owned by a 19 year old punk tweeker, tied to a post outside with a 10' chain for most of its life and not socialized or trained properly. He also would kick it when it got in his way and 'forget' to feed it for days on end.

That might make me hate people, too.

I've also said it before, but I went to school with a kid that got his ears bitten off by a Dalmatian and I've been personally bitten by a family member's dalmatian when I was about 5. Guess if Disney made a movie called 101 Pit Bulls OR if they kept the dog in Little Rascals a pit bull instead of changing it to a Bull Terrier to try to not piss people off, we might have a different view of them.

That's an interesting article. A similar thing happened to my kids and dog earlier this summer, albeit with a happier ending.

They were walking our dog, Charlie is a Puggle (pug/beagle), in front of our house and a neighbor with his two boxers came by. The two boxers went berzerk. While one dragged the owner forward the other backed up and slipped his collar. They both went straight for Charlie. The loose one grabbed Charlie by the throat while the one on the leash took his hindquarter and they started a tug of war.
The owner of the boxers was punching and kicking the boxers while my kids were screaming and trying to pull Charlie from them. Finally the boxers let go and we got Charlie inside. He was pretty heavily beaten up but just minor cuts. He spent the next two days just lieing in his bed. It took him a couple of weeks to stop walking with a limp but he is as good as new now. The owner of the boxers came by a little later and we verified they had their shots. He apologized and promised to be much more careful.
I'd seen neighborhood dogs fight before when I was growing up. It happens. Hopefully, there are competent people around to break it up before someone get hurt.

how is it different really? ok, lets use kids then. if you constantly beat on your kids and dont be a good parent/example then sooner or later they are going to lash out and hurt someone or break the law and wind up in jail...right? how is a dog any different than that?

when johnny child molester diddles a kid you always hear that he was diddled when he was a kid so thats why he does it. why is it so easy to accept the argument that the parents are responsible for their childrens behavior but not their pets?

Its also worth noting that any dog that goes into a shelter that has short hair and they can't figure out what it is is called a pit bull.

We've been at the shelter quite a bit and at least 1/4 of the dogs that are labeled 'Pit Bull Mix' are Boxers, labs or some other kind of dog. I think they just see so many pits that they assume most dogs are pits.

I've been attacked by a boxer. I think that dog is an asshole. All other boxers have a clean slate, until they attack me too. Same goes for golden retrievers and pit bulls.

    Who says it isn't different?

The point was that the dog (of any breed) can't tell me how or where he grew up and who his owner was and how he was treated.
