V. why did you put her in martial Arts if you dont mind me asking?
For more than one reason. I wanted her to start learning self-defense now, for when she gets older. I also wanted her to develop certain qualities such as respect of self and others, discipline, self-confidence, strenght of body and mind.
She is doing WTF Taekwondo (World Taekwondo Federation), she will learn sparring, kicks and punches, and a lot of other stuff. She can go up as far as the Olympics if she want, and if she's good enough. They wil learn how to break boards, use of weapons too. But right now, I just want her to learn basics, and have fun and spend her energy. She will have plenty of time to learn.

By the way, I have been looking and thinking for a while before choosing TKD. I have made many calls in many different school, teaching different martial arts. I was looking at Judo, Karate, Aikido, and Kung Fu. I chosed TKD because it is the only martial art where she can go as far as the Olympics. It could very usefull to her when she goes to College too. And at her young age, she's only 5, the other martial art techniques seemed a little bit too harsh and serious for her to start with. Later on, if she'd like to, there is nothing that keep her from mixing in another martial art. Her Master is from Korea, he is AWSOME teaching the little kids. I'm just amazed when I watch them, and my little Kellie is having the thrill of her life.![]()

V. the Olympic thing is not true. I started martial arts at 12 and was an instructor for 5-10 year old kids. Judo, Aikido and Karate are Olympic events. If you have her in it just for Self Defense I would advice against it, its not a practical martial art until you have 10-15 years of experience.Originally posted by MissTwisties

Of course...all opinions differ. It's not only about the art in itself, it's also about the person doing it. I know that she will have a lot more advantages doing TKD for self-defense, than any other kid that have no martial art techniques at all. I don't believe it to be true that only Kung Fu and Karate (or any other full contact techniques) can get you out of a bad situation. Mostly any martial art technique is better than none at all.
P.S. Aikido is not an Olympic event from what I have heard from many instructors. It is a martial art that isn't into competition like most other techniques.

My son took TKD for many years......
Why you ask? Cause he wanted to and it was fun!! Plain and simple...when it was not fun anymore we found something else for fun!!
BTW....those pics are adorable![]()

"The fact that there are no competitions in Aikido is a logical conclusion of its philosophy. Since winning and losing are never a concern, the trainees are free to dedicate their efforts to mutual goals. It is therefore possible for men, women, and children of all ages to walk together down the path of budo, the heart of Aikido."

TKD is a beutiful and highly effective once you know it and I have no issues with it. also dont think that because you know martial arts that you are prepaird to defend your self. I have seen black belts get the shit kicked out of them. Why because they dont know how to controll there fear and go into a panic when the shit hits the fan..
Oh an by the way very cool pics.. Martial arts will be great for her. It will most defiantly help with her confidence and attitude. Its very positive for kids and she will have a great time doing it along with making life long friends.
or they go to a school looking to hand out belts..... if it is not reflex you are done....Originally posted by Buddhaman

I want her to earn each and every belt. If I see that they are handing out belts like candies, she'll be out of there as she gets older, to go in a more serious school. So far, so good tho. I like what I see when I go there.

there is a lot of truth to that. 5-6 years or training you can get a Black belt as long as you know the drills. That's all well in good as long as you know your limits. I know black belt who love martial arts but they also know that they are not fighters.Originally posted by bigred875

i'm a brown-belt in Shotokan Karate (www.jkaboston.com). The worst injury i have sustained to date in class was from a little kid like yours. we were doing some basic sparring stuff...going really slow for junior students and kids. i ended up working with a 10 year for a bit. the drill we were doing was a kick to stomach (attacker), and down-block followed by reverse punch (defender). I just assumed they kid would be able to reach into my critical zone and didn't back up enough. becuase he was short, he wasn't able to reach all the way up to the target area (stomach) with his foot. the result was a soild kick to my nuts. they kid has also been in karate for like 3 years at that point, so his form and technique were decent.
ouch.

If I get another fuckin' bike stolen...
hahaha!!! Yesterday, while they were practicing kicks, she was the only one we saw kicking much further ahead (meaning kicking passed the cushion, almost to the instructor's nutz!), and my husband was worried she might kick the guy right there. We were laughing. But still, there is a big difference between a 10 yrs old, and a 5 yrs old...and she just started, so of course her kicks won't be too strong right now...![]()
