    Leaves

I hate raking. Whats to say I cant just mow the fuckers over and turn them to mulch? Or use the bagging attachment and do it that way?

Serious question, can I do these and be effective enough to not kill my lawn?

    Re: Leaves

Mow your lawn in a circle, blowing the results towards the same location. When you're done, you'll have the left overs in a relatively small area. Re-mow them. Done. For best results, be sure your mower's blades are nice and sharp, and that you have done a good job cleaning the underside of the deck, as this will promote the finest "mulching".

If you have an absurd amount, run it with a bagger.

It is best not to use a bagger though, as dropping the the grass blades on your grass promotes water retention and creates a layer of quality dirt as it decomposes. The same logic can be applied to your leaves. I'd say you should be good to go.

You trying to rub some road salt in the wound? :p

If you use the bagging attatchment there should be no problem as long as you dont have a crappy lawnmower.

Baggers work but if you have a big lawn and a lot of leaves, you will be emptying it so often that it will start to piss you off. Several years ago I bought Husqvarna's largest backpack blower they make and I haven't looked back since.

    Re: Leaves

Well, 90% of our grass is dead from the drought, but we're finally getting rain again, so I want to try to clear up the grass a little bit anyway. Guess Ill just mulch the bastards.

    Re: Leaves

On a treed lot I had an 8 to 1 chopper and it was still 3 pick up loads.

Only a tow behind sucker bagger really works

Stihl back pack blower is the only on that really works.

ZEN, Its there, you need exercise, Yaweh provides.

IF you grind it into the lawn that's OK assuming the grinded still allows air and sunlight down to the grass. If you cover grass for more than 2 weeks its dead. The composting products are acidic so you would have to lime in the early spring... you probably should lime anyway

I actually wouldnt mind raking the leaves, but I already have lower back issues, and raking destroys me like no other.

    I know how you feel

Focus on strengthening your lower back in general, same with stretching it. My guess is that your lower back is weak and tight, and the raking really shows it. Back when you were in NE, shoveling kill you too? Done PT?

Yup, I think thats the issue, I slouch brutally too. Riding bikes hurts as well. And yes, shoveling was brutal, but at least I had a snowblower there.

    Re: Leaves

i know what you mean...i despise raking...i guess it really depends on how much you have as far as leaves and how long your grass is underneath the leaves...i use a self propelled walk behind with a mulching blade and a bag and i dump the bag into a garbage can...the circle cutting method works pretty good too...blowers are great if you have an area to corral the leaves into, your grass is short and if it's not a windy day...other than that you probably waste more time using one than just running over them with a lawnmower

all i can say is make sure the grass and leaves are dry or it's a pain in the ass

    Re: Leaves

I do exactly what Tricky demonstrated in his picture when I have too much accumulation. Otherwise I use my lawnmower to collect the leaves and dump them into the woods.

    Re: Leaves

I wouldn't mulch a damaged or dead lawn. You'll be dropping weed and tree seeds back into the soil and worse, covering them with a nice peat moss like substance (clippings). A healthy lawn can choke the weeds and tree seedlings but it doesn't sound like yours is like that. Pay a kid to rake them or bag them with your mower.

    Re: Leaves

the mower will never produce results as good as raking. I despise all types of yard work so I tried the mower approach before and it just didn't work well enough cause I can be anal about stuff. If I'm doing it then I'm doing it right.
