does anyone have any recommendations on accessing files on a home computer running win2kpro, when on the road (from an XP computer)?
I'm running win2kpro on a p4 1.3GHz/640mb ram/160&80gb harddrives computer
I googled remote access, and tutorials show that you need XP pro running to use the Windows application.
I started with google to find more universal programs, but began running into advertisements and use-the-trial-then-pay types of software
does anyone have any recommendations on a free utility to help me do this?
I also have a 4gb flash drive with me all the time to run programs if necessary.
here's the thing, do you NEED to have remote access to your home machine? and before you answer, is it worth the lower level of security which is inherent to opening up a machine to remote access?
if you have a 4GB flash drive, what else do you need to carry with you?
i mean if you really need to cart a lot of data around you can always get a portable drive.. I have a nice 250GB LaCie portable which i used to run portable apps from and store all my working data on, and its durable.. and faster than most flash drives..
you could set up you home machine with file sharing and use a password protected share, but if you're behind a firewall it will take some configuring for it to work.
I think this method is ill-advised though unless you set up a VPN to keep it all locked down. Even windows remote access application uses a pretty simplistic encryption algorithm that is ill advised to use imho
Get out while you can

logmein.com ROCKS! I have it on no less than 15 computers, including family members for remote support.
Plus, if there's a problem, I walk across the hall and smack the techs![]()
I used www.gotomypc.com for years. Checck it out it worked for me just fine.
GoToMyPC is a pay service, LogMeIn has a free for individuals that doesn't limit how many computers you can use.
www.getdropbox.com
It works VERY well.
Besides that, you could start an FTP/SFTP server (I wouldn't do an FTP, very insecure).
I use logmein.com as well as my boss. Free and it works
You suck at life. Why don't you quit?
My dad told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up. So I became an Asshole.
You could check into VNC as well, though I'm not sure how much of a security risk it is.
It's basically a program where you put in your home IP address/password, and it logs you in to your computer directly. Your whole desktop is there, and all the programs and stuff are run on your home computer, you're just kind of watching.
Last I checked it was free. WinVNC is the program I've used before, and it's Windows-OS independent, meaning your home computer could be running Win95, and you're accessing from XP and it won't care.
Edit: more info, and yes, it's still free. You'll need the home client and the remote client.
