Anyone live in or near, or know about, Newton, NH?
Any opinions on potentially buying a house in that area?

I ride through there all the time on my way home from work. Nice area. From what I have seen, I would live there.
I've done lawns out in that area lotta water out that way but nice people from the few I've met. Seems like a pretty cool place.

I'm one town south, it is a nice area, can't speak about prices or property tax.
If you work anyplace south of there be aware Rocks Village Bridge, an easy route to 95, will be closing for a year on June 18th.
It's a nice town. We looked at a couple of houses there a few years ago but the taxes were ridiculous so we opted to buy elsewhere.
EDIT - I just checked their property tax rate and they now seem to be more in line with the surrounding towns.

the only normal people are the ones you don't know very well.
Im in the process of looking. My GF and I both work in MA, but its hard to turn our head away to how far your dollar can go with a house just over the boarder.

I agree entirely. My angle is that my tax rate is roughly 2x what some pay in MA. But my comparable house is worth 50% as much. Since tax is based on property value, it works out about the same out of my pocket. And I'd much rather live here, although for highly personal reasons.
As with everything, YMMV.
My missus works in NH. I still have hopes of doing so myself again someday too.
That close to the border should be convenient and hold value, I would think.
Amesbury was on my radar if I were to move to MA; houses aren't (or weren't) as expensive as some other communities. Although when you look at it didn't cut my commute enough for me.

Yeah we have Amesbury on our radar, but property taxes are pretty damn high there as well. And if you go 20 minutes north you still get a lot "better" of a house (newer, more land, etc).
I think I can rationalize the higher property taxes in NH, although best scenario would be to work in NH as well but corporate jobs seem to be a little scarce up there.
We are really just looking to get a nice home in a good neighborhood, with a good school, and no more than 30 minutes over the boarder.

30 min from the border is easy. 30 minutes from decent work across the border is not so easy. Unless you look towards the middle of the state.
Check out the tax rate for Windham, NH!
Someday I'll find me a nice job near Pease.

What bump? Everyone says Newton's nice! But yeah, Newton's nice...![]()
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
I take it you gals don't know newton? It's one of the most affluent suburbs around. Comparable to Wellesley, needham, Westwood, etc. if you're familiar with the mentioned towns. It's very diverse more recently where the population increases to over 100k during school (tons of colleges in newton). 1 section 8 housing on lincoln at in nh square and a couple scattered but u go to any city the size of newton and you'll see the same thing. If u have kids the school system is good. Used to be much better. If u can afford newton god bless you.
Haha my bad. I saw newton nh I thought he meant newton highlands. Disregard what I wrote. Carry on
Any idea where I can find the tax rates for NH towns?

Sam
God property taxes suck in NH!
Im struggling to justify a house in MA, vs a house in NH. In my price range I can get basically a brand new house in Newton, NH but in Mass I get a 30 year old house....
But damn those property taxes blow, $7k a year for a $300k house!!!???

Compare property values in MA too. Obviously it varies a lot by town, but my sister and brother in law have a comparable house in a town in MA with a rate nearly half mine. However their house is worth twice as much. So total tax out of pocket is about the same.
But yeah, taxes suck. Always have, always will.
Property taxes are deductible.
Mortgage interest is deductible.
PMI is deductible.
This, and beer, are the upsides in life these days.
