That is bullshit...

Because people who are doing 10 over the speed limit will be charged with an accident when a fuggin blue hair backs out of their driveway with out looking....and every reason under the sun that may incriminate people.....
I think it would be a good idea for vehicles that carry passengers as a business but not for personal vehicles....
This is probably not ALL bad unless you are flagrantly breaking the law constantly. If you're speeding and don't get in an accident it's not going to hurt you in any way.
If the blue hair pulls out in front of you, they will look at her black box as well and see that she pulled out. You'll perhaps get partial blame for the accident. Lots of other accidents it could help you. If a car pulls in front of a bike without signalling, it will help the guy on the bike, etc...
Plenty of commercial vehicles record way more than they are recommending already. Big rigs have tons and tons of data recording and reporting already.

Of course, the flip side is, the drunk asshole (or high on weed) that hit you, has one less thing to lie about...
either way how will a black box be able to detect that....
not buying that...esp. on a bike... It will end in "he" was speeding blue hair pulled out...if "he"wasn't speeding the accident would never have happened...again I agree 100% for commercial vehicles just not personal.Originally posted by benVFR

I think it would be used as a loophole instead of focusing on the real problem....
We will see... you are taking a more negative/paranoid view of the police/insurance/whoever than I am.Originally posted by bigred875

Guess I can agree though, this is a band-aid to try and make people safer without tackling the real problem, which is driver education.
I suppose the black box will not be able to tell if the driver was on the cellphone.
I doubt we can stop it...

Add another $1000 to the cost of a car
I will never buy a new car, they make me pay for seat belts I don't wear, air bags I don't want , now a fucking device that has the potential to be used agains me in a court of law
Why don't we just make everybody ride in a JohnnyCab and get it over with

So this "black box", concept - are they gonna call it OBDII perhaps
My company was looking into GPS for our fleet vehicles, when our insurance agency pointed out most of what we wanted to know could be had via 100$ software/adapter package and some memory for the OBDII unit.
Anything 1996+ has it, for 'diagnostic' purposes. Since when does the gov't regulate how your dealership diagnoses your car? hmmm...
save the searching
Available now at your local Sears store.
Oh yeah...you too can be your own insurance adjuster :
Plus, if you're unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, CarChipE/X will automatically generate an accident log showing the last critical 20 seconds of speed.
Your thinking about the rumored ODB3.Originally posted by somestrangeguy

ODB2 does have the port, as does ODB1. I have laptop scantools for ODB1 and ODB2. Pretty slick stuffODB2 doesn't record, but if you have a scantool or the fleet plugin stuff it will...
GM has "black boxes" now. They record the last XX (I forget) number of seconds before the airbags go off. This isn't used by insurance but by the safty board (YEA RIGHT) There was a(some) case(s) that they did use this in court though.

They tried this on a Beverly chick on her drunkdriving wreck in her Tahoe or other GM product. They tried to show her speed as like 52 in a 35 or someother parameter.......
Case may still be going on.
