My kids have gotten interested in skateboards and have been borrowing the neighbors. Places like Target and WalMart have very inexpensive models that seem like they'd last a day. How much should I spend so two kids can use it regularly? Buy it at a specialty shop?

Check out Zumiez at most malls. They carry decent brands.
I'd buy from a skate shop, if you want good stuff. A good setup shouldn't cost you more than $100. See here for some ideas:

If you buy components separately, you'll pay more. Example, my longboard was $250, since I bought each component separately. (longboards are more expensive anyway)
Ccs is a huge mail order skateboarding company. They usually have complete board deals.

I'd call Sid at water brothers in Newport; he's a legend who's forgotten more about board sports than most people will ever know...he will steer you right http://originalwaterbrothers.com/?post_type=product
I'd plan on getting one for each kid. setup is individual preference, competition is good, and eventually someone's gonna break it. Taking turns when the board has to be exchanged sucks...
I'll preface this by saying I know nothing on this subject, but some friends who do like Orchard in Allston. If you check it out and you don't like it, at least it's not too far of a drive for you...

Any skate shop should be able to set you up. There are a few different chains in most major malls and I'd bet there are a dozen independent shops in the greater boston area. If the prices are similar to when I was buying them expect to spend 100-150 on each. I can't recommend a Walmart board. It's not something that will last.
Goto orchard or beacon hill skate shop. Get them started right.
There isn't really any such thing as an entry level board.
And lastly: long boards are the wrong boards.

You'll probably find that you can get by with the cheap dept store boards until the kids start to actually be able to Ollie and other tricks. It takes a while. I bought my son a board at a local shop last year after he had trashed the cheap boards. It is a fun experience for the kids, you pick the deck, trucks, bearings, wheel, skin and they build it right there. We went with a Creature deck and good but not the premium grade trucks and other bits. Total was about $160, he hasn't completely destroyed it yet and the trucks are fine to slap onto his next deck.
Sorry if my post with longboards might have confused some. Longboards are more for cruising and not so much for park riding and tricks. However, there are short longboards (the contradiction in terms), which are somewhat hybrids.
That wasn't a dig at you chuckles.
Long boards are to skateboards what scooters are to sport bikes. Yeah, they're iinda the same, but they're not the same.

I know ZERO about skateboarding, but this is kind of amusing.

Back when I was a little skate rat, Ollies weren't even invented yet but ramps/pools were all the rage. This was a few years ago on my next door neighbor's ramp, after a 30 year or so layoff (LOL).

My wife took son and daughter to Zoomiez. Big sale going on. Don't know what they got because they went out riding as soon as they got home!

Care. Not. Found. No clue what constitutes "long" vs. "Not long" but my kids are having fun doing something that isn't sitting on their ass texting.
