My guess is it was real, just not involving entirely innocent Olympians...in other words, it was the pimps of some hookers who robbed the Olympians during or after a time they were trying to hook up, or similar scenario with a drug dealer they did business with, etc.

There's some reason that some of the "victims" didn't want to report it and the stories didn't line up, and it's a common scam to victimize people when they are in a position of being unlikely to report.
