    Not until they're 4 or 5.

My daughter is 6 and it's been a while since I've been able to slide anything past her. (including her fathers poor behavior)

I agree, you will get away with acting like an idiot for only so long. The he(she) will start to know you are for real...

I have 3 kids now, the oldest one is 4. I show them good manners and how to behave themselves, but I also joke with them and play with them a lot. A LOT! I also include them in nearly everything that I do. There is plenty of fun, learning and, when needed, discipline in my house.

I have 3 also with the oldest bieng 13 and my youngest is 6. You will know when to be a dad and when not to be. You can be both, just not at the same time.

I like that, Jane. Just what does a dad act like?

I've got three, ranging in age from 2 years (yesterday!) to 17 years with an 8 year old thrown in between for good measure. Rule #1 - there are no rules, stupid! You'll know what to do & when to do it usually. Luckily for me, I have Big Shirl...

    Doc, you're everyone's daddy.

The serious answer is to just act like yourself. The dad thing will just happen. Don't sweat it.

Pretty much. My son is now 11 and he's the greatest. It all just happens.

This is why I have nieces and nephews. I like to borrow children, but I'm far too selfish and impatient to have my own.

But if you need a babysitter, I've got baby fever like you read about!

When i bring my 10 year old to the track it goes like this:

"You'll hear colorful language and see some interesting things. It's all in good fun. Just don't repeat anything in front of mom or teachers!"
