TracRac or System One.
I went to MMI I know what Im doing here chief
$860 ???
I bought this universal rack for my Silverado just a couple months ago, at the right time I guess as well, only $99, not the $140 they are asking now, rated for 800 lbs, not the whimpy 450 the Thule is rated for.
you could attach it with clamps, but I bolted it as recommended, if I ever want to take it off, I'll just put plugs in the holes I drilled

Not looking to carry a heavy load...maybe a ladder or some lumber here and he's retired and has no need for a heavy duty one...if he was looking to carry heavy stuff I would look at a heavier duty permanent mount rack with a higher load capacity...the point is he doesn’t want to mess around with clamps and bolts every time he wants to put it on or take it off...it’s a bday present being split between 3 people...cheaper is good but it has to do the job the way I want and so far the Thule is the best I’ve seen for the job but that’s why I’m asking to see if anyone knows of any other similar quick attach/detach good quality racks that have a cheaper price tag

a heavy duty one would carry much more, like ½ ton or more and would extend over the cab, and would require permanent attachment
lumber adds up quick, remember wind (truck speed) load, 450 aint much
My needs are the same, as I am retiring, a ladder, maybe lumber, or a kayak, so far, I've only used it for lumber

I found Realtruck.com has a ton of that stuff. Not always the cheapest, but not bad, and it will give you some ideas.

I have a TracRac Pro, capacity is 1,000 lbs, is held on by 8 C clamps (2 per leg) and takes about 10 minutes to put on or take off. The initial installation takes about an hour to set up.
If you want a cheap option, go with this:
2015 Toyota Tacoma Ladder Racks - Rola
No drill installation, a couple of clamps per leg, $340.
I assume this Tacoma has the deck rail system, they pretty much all do.

yea i think he'd like to stay away from drilling if possible so it would have to be some type of clamp attachment system
thanks...i'll def check those out
yea his truck has the rail system...i totally forgot about that...there are 4 rail mounted tie downs in there right now which he uses all the time...is the tracrac pro compatible with the tacoma track system?...basically will the tie downs still be usable or will they have to be removed each time he wants to put the rack on?...those tie downs extend into the bed area and the lip of the rack seems to wrap over the edge on the inside...not sure i will be able to use both...what kind of tools are required to tighten the c clamps?
with that rola system it holds more weight than the xsporter but ties into the tacoma track system so i assume you have to slide that one in and out of the track each time you want to install/remove or can you remove the tightening nuts and just pull it off and then put the tightening nuts back on and leave them there?
I originally din't want to drill either, but after reading reviews and a suggestion in one, that holes couple easily be covered with a neat looking plastic plug, I decided
to drill
I didn't even think about being a brand whore for the rack, but when I buy the kayak, it will be an Orvis kayak

I'm not sure what the compatibility is with the Tacoma rail system, mine has been mounted on a Chevy 1500, and now a Ram 1500, neither have the rails. The C clamps on my TracRac Pro have one allen head bolt per clamp, I usually just take an allen socket and put in on the end of my battery impact to speed up the install. Looking now I'm not sure if they sell the system I have for the Tacoma. That said, mine was about the same price as the Thule system you linked.
From the reviews it looks like you would have to take out the factory tie down points to install the front rack, but you could slide them back in between the front and rear rack before installing the rear rack. The top of the racks have a T track that runs across the top of the ladder rack rails, you can buy all sorts of attachments for tie down points and such, click on the "related parts" tab just below the description. I have a set of 4 load stops with mine which are useful, mine also has integrated tie down points on the legs of each rack. If it were me, I'd probably go with the Rola system based on price and reviews

I'd recommend the TracRac SR Sliding system. My dad has one on his truck and it's great. The rails get permanently bolted to the top of the bed sides, and the rack parts easily slide off and on when you want to remove or install them. It's in the $1k range plus install, but it's an awesome system.
thanks fellas...the only thule models compatible with that year tacoma are the xsporter pro, tracrac pro 2, tracrack tracone according to the thule website...on that real truck website it says that the sr system is compatible so i'm not sure about all that...i like that rola system but i think have to slide out all 4 tie down points and then slide it into the track sounds like more of a pain than to just slide the tie downs around and just c clamp a trackrac on there with a drill...i may take a look at a clean used rack too...i think we are going to just tell him we are getting it for his birthday and then make sure we get what he wants

looks like he wants the xsporter model...only wants the ability to carry a ladder here and there and maybe some lumber...if he needed over 450 lbs of lumber it would get delivered anyway...i'll have to keep an eye out on CL...thanks fellas
