Thanks for the help today CEO and a bunch of dummies

After waiting over 2 years for CEO834754376375437 to come help me set up my workshop in the basement as he promissed, I could wait no more

I guess it wasn't a bad thing as it gave me some time to gather lumber and hardware to get the job started.

My plan was to start this on a rainy Saturday..and it rained big time all day Saturday. Things didn't quite go as planned Saturday and I ended up being a couch potatoe ALL day!
Today was the day, the sun was out and it was 65. I finally started building a workbench in my basement. I've got a lot of ideas and no money so I have no idea where this project will go.
I started work bright and early and opened the basement door for the first time shortly after 11am, gathered my tools and was working by noon!
Four hours later, this is what i got.







The lower shelf is complete and gives me 2 areas of storage for tools. The top is just 3/4 plywood for now glued and screwed. I also plan on adding 2x12 framing lumber as a bench top for added strength. I'll screw those on from the underside through the 3/4 plywood. After that, I'll cap the ends with a 2x6 or something so you won't see any end cuts, and to cover the framing you can see in now.
Plus the thick deck on top will be good support for a big bench vise.

it's also removeable "if" i ever wanted to get rid of it. While it is all self supporting, I did fasten it to the wall with these 3/8"x3" wedge bolts, it's a big screw for concrete.



I'm going to add another shelf a few feet up the wall and get some peg board for the area between the bench and the shelf on the wall. Not a huge project!

There's also a wall to the left of it that I'm going to add a high shelf to and a closet hanger rod so I can put my helmets on the shelf and hang my gear on the rod.

See how I feel after work tomorrow, there may be more progress

No feet! The floor is level and the 4x4's are cut and notched the exact same length.

I'm a mile from paved road, and 3" of rain yesterday wouldn't make for a pretty R1 by the time I got to pavement

Fourth picture with the wedge bolts. They are rated for 8,500lbs of pull and I used 8 of them. I have a funny feeling I will not be pulling it away from the walls even if I put a complete bike in the vise and pulled on it

Plans are to finish the bench first, add some shelving and some peg board, then make a hanger for my gear and helmets. I'd like to epoxy the floor but I may cheap out and get some oil based floor paint

Do those wedge bolts go in more reliably than Tapcons? I haven't used them yet, but I plan on it when I need some heavy duty fastening to concrete again instead of running a bolt completely through the wall.

The most important thing with a wedge bolt is using the proper drill bit for the fastener. If you notice the tip of the wedge bolt in the picture is blue, you'd use a 3/8" Blue tip drill bit for that fastener. They also make a 3/8" red tip wedge bolt that needs a 3/8" Red tip drill bit. Same goes for larger and smaller sizes. The specs on these fasteners are amazing, they're made by Powers.

I have had great luck with the bolts that you have to drive the nail in the center of them after you place the bolt in the hole. Have yet to find a impact that can pull them out.
But from what i have seen most concrete anchor systems are quite strong. We had a concrete wall cut out and used the cheapy drop in concrete anchors that the saw was attached to pull from and our excavator snaped the bolt before it pulled the anchor out. Dirt cheap to..

Those fasteners with the center pin you drive in are strong, no question..but not as strong as a wedge bolt For what we do, we can't leave anything in the building when we leave, you're not going to remove that type of anchor.
I spent a day last summer with a rep from powers fasteners pull testing various fasteners, all were 5/8"x5" except for the epoxy type that were 5/8"x12". The sleeve anchors are the worst, they were failing at less than 4,000lbs. The pin type wasn't far off. The wedge bolt and epoxy were tested to 10,000lbs of pull, both did not fail (this was in 4 layers of red brick). Just to give you an idea, a 5/8"x5" wedge bolt has a pull test rating of 19,500lbs in 4,000psi concrete

Progress is slow, but still progress

I finished the bench today and covered it with parts so it looked like I was doing something other than nothing. There's three coats of poly on the benchtop and backsplash so any dirt and oil will be easy to clean up. I also bought a small vise from home crappo, it'll do the job for what i need.

I was going to stop on the way home from work the other day to pick up the pegboard for above the bench, but never made it. That's the next project, thought that one is pretty easy and won't take much time.

Hard to beleive that's a complete bike? haha

Not sure what happened today, but I found the energy to get this done...after starting it a year ago!
Finally added the pegboard and top shelf. Now i just have to round up all my tools and make use of it.
It'll be project YZ again this winter, this time to convert it to a street SuperMoto
