459 posts for the "One Week Until Presidential Election" and only 4 expressing gratitude for our veterans... disappointing.

I got an email from another Army officer - serving now - who wrote "There is a lot of mindless deference and adulation accorded the military these days. This is something we should aim to avoid, as it is not a terribly healthy trend for our society."

You can help the Wounded Warriors Project, the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, Edward Matayka Get Well Soon, the USO, Army Emergency Relief, or Patriot Guard Riders every day - they're open.

I personally feel very uncomfortable when anyone thanks me - I did my job and that's all, like about 99% of all other veterans. Our heroes come home on crutches, wheelchairs, or even worse - boxes.

Dana... I can understand your point.
However, the veterans that I know personally made tremendous sacrifices leaving their families during the escalation of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They were humbled by the greeters who show up at the airbase to welcome them home.
I think most veterans are fine with a simple thanks and acknowledgement of their service.

Great, if you feel strongly about it, do it every day, and make it tangible.

Kudos to Dana for posting these links. You can setup a recurring monthly donation for any amount in less than 5 minutes for the groups I'm familiar with. For the cost of a weekly latte (let alone a daily latte) your money goes a long way to doing some good for people out of the spotlight.
