I have several questions.
First, I have been researching gun safes for the past week or so. After looking at a few in person, I have figured out that I do not need one as large as I initially thought. I can stuff more guns in an average sized safe than I will own any time soon. So I have decided to target something in the 15-24 gun safe range.
I found a very attractive looking one that holds 19 rifles or 12 + shelves for a killer price. The only draw back is that it not water proof, not fire resistant, and about 350 lbs shy compared to others for quite abit more money.

Since I am not in need of a safe that is fire resistant, water proof, or going to stop a determined hamburglar this seems to be the right safe because of the considerably LOW price and size. Keep in mind, it is by no means one of those sheet metal locker room gym lockers. The one thing I don't like about it is that this Stack-On safe doesn't allow the owner to change the combination. It is limited to the combination set by the factory.
1) Is this something I can expect most safes in this priace range to be like?
2) Does anyone have experience with this brand or have a better suggestion? I would appreciate whatever imput anyone has since I have virtually no first hand experience with gun safes.
3) I have also encountered a few of the Sentry brand safes but they cost a little more. Better brand / worth it? Any experience with them?
4) The models with only a combination lock are a bit cheaper compared to safes with key and combination locks or safes with an electronic lock. I was going to aim for a safe with just the combination lock. Is that something I shouldn't go cheap on?
5) Used an option?
I have also been looking at quick access safes such as:
http://winchestersafes.com/evault/
and
http://www.gunvault.com/multi-multi-deluxe.html
5) Again, any experience or recommendations with these?
I do have an actual firearms question too.
I need to get a pistol that fits the following specifications:
-It must be either a Sig Sauer or a Glock.
-It must be .40 caliber.
-It must hold at least a 10 round magazine.
-It must be full size.
Pretty sure that limits me to the Sig P226, P229, or Glock 22.
Yesterday I put 750 rounds through the 226 and it felt pretty good. I liked most everthing about it except I found the slide release very flush against the frame and hard to quickly use. I did like the de-cocking feature. It seemed to hold up pretty well. I was in the pouring rain and in sandy/mudy conditions- no james.
I used the SLIGHTLY smaller 229 and Glock 23 (isn't a contender since it's a compact) briefly. Didn't get much insight from the little time I got to use them for.
I have heard both good and bad about the Glocks. Some say the are absolutely proven and I also hear that they arn't as good as the sigs from others.
I would apprecate any input, crazy war stories, outlandish claims, and bizzar anecdotes that will help me narrow down the choices.
Thanks in advance!
-Harrison
i bought a Sig 229 for carrying ....i just got into guns myself and after shoting my buddys i had to buy one ...the first gun i bought was a SW M&P40 which i still have and hate i cant shot it for shit ....i think you will be happy with the Sig but they are pricey
i know it wasn't on your list but what about the H&K USP in .40 cal. i had one it it was comparable in every way to my sig except the sights were differant and my sig was a compact, the USP full size. the quality, function and accuracy were equal. plus i think the USP looked cooler
i am a gardall safe dealer... i can take good care of ya

I have stack on safes and they are great... Its up to you if you want a water/fireproof safe. You can insure firearms if you wanted. You also can bolt the safe somewhere.
OK now onto the fun stuff. I will get flamed but I do not like glocks. Well I like them I just do not like firing one. I have a 229 in sig .357 and its my favorite. I also like the 226 but I do not need a full size. Sigs are made in Exeter NH. Both guns are used by state and federal agencies. Cleaning a sig is way easier. Glocks suck but are not impossible. I have thousands of rounds through my sig with no issues. I only have about 500 through the glock. I like my springfield XD better.
You will get several peoples opinions and thats what it is. I love glocks but cannot shoot them well. I am at home with my sig. Shoot them and see what you like better
Subee, thanks for the imput. That's the kinda info I am looking for.
Do you know what model your stack-on safes are? Similar no fire resistance/ water proofing and only a combination lock?
I am wondering about a longer term quality opinion on the safes.
couldnt see info on not being able to change combo, but any combo can be changed, as far as i know.
ps sentry safes BLOW

I am suprised not to see Greg in this thread yet ... ...
GREG! WHERE ARE YOU?
Note - I don't have a gun safe ...![]()
If you ain't first......you're last!
LaRNZ, the GF-6024 looks great. But, it's probably more safe than I need... and for the difference in money I can buy MOAR guns. If there is a chance that the retail price is more of an "estimate" maybe we can make it work.
However, the easy access pistol safe (PS915-B-E) isn't a big jump from the other ones I was looking at. That's something I'd definitely be interested in seeing.
There are a bunch of local dealers around my area. I'm going to see if any are open in a few hours and have either on display.
My safes are not that great. They are more of the lockable cabinets. I have them in a locked room in a closet bolted to the floor and wall. House alarm, locked room and locked safes. I have 4. They all serve a purpose and would be difficult for someone to get them out of the house.
Sig ftw imo
i get it completley a guns first job is to function correctly and keep your ass from getting killed.
...but there are so many good ones out there why buy one you don't like the looks of?
it's like the old honda vs kawi debate. given that both will function equally for 99% of your riding. buy the one that you like.
If you can find one i would look for a SW99 in .40 Its a proven design by walther than S&W got license to remake and they are great guns. P99 in .40 is the walther version. I personally love sigs and would get a sig over a glock. I do not like glocks. Hate the feel, cleaning is a PITA, the trigger sucks on them. But being a competition shooter trigger feel is a big thing for me. My personal favorite sig is the P250, but its not for sale in MA
