As far as banning them goes...Would they really do that much more damage than a 00 buck round? 00 buck won't punch nearly has big of a hole but you have 9 pellets (15 if you go with the magnum rounds) hitting with in a few inches of each other. So which is worse? One giant hole, or a bunch of small ones made by balls that deflect like crazy and tear you up inside while doing so?

I think the bigger issue is for the emergency room people that have to dig the sharp shards out of a person that is shot. I don't remember if it's true or not but I seem to remember something like that being an issue when black talons got supposedly banned. I don't know if they actually did or not.

The jacket from the black talons peeled back and exposed sharp metal edges. They didn't fragment. But the EMTs, DR's, etc, all whined that those bullets didn't just make a hole, they cut the hell out of everything as well.

Banned? Naw. Winchester renamed them, removed the lubalox coating and there ya go.

As for those, as well as the shells above...heaven forbid someone make a projectile more effective.

There are actually a ton of specialty loads for shotguns, I remember some others like "strung buckshot" that had to large balls with 6 inches of steel cable connecting them, as well as another load that had 20 hardened steel darts in the shell.

I thought the whining was about the chance of the bullet tearing the glove. I don't however consider the concerns of EMS personnel whining in regards to BSI.

I think we're both right...now that you mention the glove thing I remember that from back then as well. And the jacket shredding flesh.

It was whining. They cried and complained that those bullets were too lethal. If it was just about their gloves and their own well being, that's one thing. They went a few steps further and complained about the bullet hole looking like the victim had been stabbed multiple times. Those people are the reason said bullets got banned, it wasn't just because their gloves got cut.

Dr's, EMT's, me myself...stab ourselves all the time accidentally. Ask a Dr how many times they've found their hands covered in blood after a surgery when the gloves come off.

On another note, I don't think too many gang bangers and other people are going to use 12 gauges to hold up the local 7-11, so the above shells might not get the bad press like the talons did.

Just because it happens doesn't mean I'd want it to happen more. If a group of EMS people got together to voice a concern about they're safety I'd lend them an ear. Not to mention it's not only the bad guys that get shot.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think they should be banned. I Guess I just don't think when EMS personnel are concerned with they're safety in regards to BSI and blood and fluid born pathogens it should be considered whining. It's a tough enough job without having to worry more due to an increased risk of getting stuck and picking up some disease.
