Phew! At least you plan to replace it! FWIW-when I was looking to get back into sporty-quads, I got a lot of negative feedback on the 450's x'ers for TRAIL use...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
u wouldnt need a decked out crf50 would you?![]()

By now, are the Banshees overrated?(I searched atv, quad, and banshee and this is as close to an appropriate thread as I could find)
I always wanted one as a kid, now they’re going for like 6-10k, which I bet is more than sticker back then.
Are there newer used alternatives that would blow it away?
Your park avenue leads to..
I’ve probably owned 10 Banshee’s back when you could buy one new for $5k. They were excellent trail machines and even better hill climbers. That being said, the newer 450’s will outperform the older banshee’s at pretty much everything.
The reason you’re seeing the prices where they are, is more for nostalgia reasons.. they stopped making them in 2006. A 19 year cash cow for Yamaha, with almost no notable changes other than switching the front end from J-Arm, to A-Arm in 1990.
I’d still buy one if the price was right and the thing wasn’t completely hacked up.
Yamaha
Banshee is right up there with the 250x and Quadzilla, IMO. That 350 twin was pretty stout from the factory (based on the RD350 engine) and responded well to power mods.
Stock for stock nothing current will blow it away however, comparatively speaking, I suspect the Raptor 700 would have an edge over it in the torque department.
My first job was at a Yamaha, Kawi, Arctic Cat dealer and I loved seeing the purple/yellow color combo even though it was strikingly similar to the Smokin' Joes livery. Didn't matter. Once that 350 came to life, it could have been any color scheme
I always thought these were really cool if you lived in the desert, but didn't make any sense for New England.
This was back in early 2000s when everything Yamaha made had a wheel base that was 1248943 feet long or 3 inches long and handled like shit in the woods.
The arguments I got in with my Yamaha friends on Warriors/Blasters while my Hondas whipped their asses anywhere but a straight line. The 400ex was missing reverse at the time, otherwise it would have been the perfect wheeler before the 450s took over.
Anyway. I saw the light and think 4-wheelers are lame now. Sue-me.
Never would have found 2-wheels without them.

A man of many names...Jay, Gennaro, Gerry, etc.
I have a 2006 Raptor 700 and a 2019 YFZ450R, both with similar performance mods, and the 450 is much much faster than the 700. But we are not really comparing apples to apples. The 450R was made specific to MX and cross country, where the 700 is the all purpose.. it does everything ok.
The banshee wasn’t fast stock either, it needed a pipe/power reeds/jetting kits to wake it up. Then being long and front heavy, you needed to install an AMP link to even think about getting traction.
Yamaha
on the too-many-wheels topic... anyone interested in a crazy clean Quadsport 230 located in central MA? a buddy of mine has a prime example that comes with a spare parts bike was well.

sorry to spam the thread but going to anywayhere is the '87 Quadsport 230, he put the ad back up on CL so you can see pics. price is negotiable and as mentioned comes with another spare parts bike. this is a good riding buddy of mine and neighbor, he's a freak about maintenance, Sideshow here knows him as well.

It's absolutely reasonable to compare a 1000cc anything to a 350cc anything. Fair and balanced.
I apologize for not phrasing my sentences in such a specific way as to clearly state that by comparison of similar drivetrains, power output and weight ratio the Banshee is still relevant
