Hey Guys,
I was talking to my uncle earlier and it turns out my 16 year old cousin just got his learners permit and wants to start getting some riding time in with his dad. He has no motorcycle or dirt bike experience so I am trying to help him find a good bike to start learning on. Preferably something cheap and in a something that its no big deal if he bails off it a time or two in the learning process or just tips it over or something. So let me know what you guys have or what you have seen around.
Thanks.
DEFINITELY take the MSF course!
tell him to get a ninja 250. I think a 600 for a 16 year old is a little much especially if he never riden a dirt bike either. it's a lot of resposibility under your wrist when you're on a 600
I agree, ninja 250 is the best learners bike out there. Plus the new ones are so pretty so I didn't hate the fact that I was on a 250 at all

Depends on the person. Some people can deal with a 650 out of the box. Other people can't ride a pedal bike woth shit. I usually tell people to find an EX 250 or 500. Cheap, parts are readily available and you can take a turn just as fast on it.

I can resist everything but Pete's mom.
+1 on the 250, although I would never buy a new one. Hell I outgrew a KZ305 in a month.

I just taught my brother on my F4i and he followed up with the course in West Boylston. My advice, for someone who never ride before, start small. Like the others have said, go 250. More than likely, anyone with no experience riding anything bigger than a 250 will drop it.

How 'bout a Buell Blast? Lots of them out there at low prices.
EX500's are cheap and plentiful. Hell, my buddy has one for sale that's ugly but mechanically decent for $1200.

How bout a free BM trackday with purchase?![]()
Until you can ride the wheels off it you do not "outgrow" a 250.
You just want more power instead of taking the time to learn to ride a slow bike fast.
I should have never given up the 500 I had. It is why I went back to a YSR50.![]()

I started out on my first bike, an R6, in april of 2006 and managed to pull it off. I'm not a huge fan of the "YOU HAVE TO START ON A 250 YOU WILL DIE!" theory even though it does have its points. However taking the MSF course and finding anything from an EX250 to an SV650 will fair him well. Any inline 4 has a much smaller margin of error, so while he may be able to handle it... that one mistake might face worse consequences. It definitely depends on the person.
ninja 250 is the way to go,hell be a way better rider starting off on a 250
Here's an advice noone has given yet. Regardless if it is a 250, 600, 100, 1300, etc, make sure you can touch the ground.

good advice dean t but any1 from 5 foot 1 and up can touch the ground on a lil ninja 250 and if he a tall 1popolli powersports has the hyosung 250, full size bike with a 250 engine in it
