houston we have a problem.
the reed valve set up on the 83 is different than the 82, as is the airbox. considering these two pieces are joined by the carb...... it may be time for a beer.
the 83 reed valve comes out at an angle and is a 6 bolt unit. the 82 comes straight back and it's a 4 bolt unit. the airbox for the 83 has a rubber funnel/tubing unit to accomodate the angle, the 82 of course is a straight mount. due to the rear suspension change swapping airboxes isn't an option. going to see if there is a 6 bolt straight back reed valve out there.
i'm guessing just running an air filter is bad for a dirt bike? kidding.
well, just kind of kidding.

oh, and when i say reed valve, i actually mean the reed valve joint. not the actual reed unit.

well, i think i can do some redneck engineering off the 82 airbox that "may" work. the airbox has a large hole that is filled with a rubber joint that mounts to the carb. the actuall carb mounting point isn't dead center on that rubber joint so i am thinking i can spin that joint and gain a little bit better access.
i'll try to get some pics up soon so you have a better idea.

Okay, taking a little break so I have some time to upload pics
here is the parts bike i received in all it's glory in the first two pics. the third is a crazy exhaust patch job it apparently received and the lat couple were what i accomplished before the sun went down.

By the looks of this airbox, I really do think the bike may have been powered by a hamster

When I started to drain the "oil" not sure what got in there. the red almost looks like ATF mixed in there.

And I might be crazy but, should oil spool up like soft serve ice cream when it drains? Look, little oil stalagmites!

Have a few more to add (including the most recent dilema), but have to run right now. Enjoy.
oh, and in case you are curious, that is a 52T rear sprocket on there. How fast does a 2 stroke 250 accelerate with that!!

so word on the street is that someone has spark!
so, as you can see in the last photo, thats my issue. i think i can get it to "work", but won't be able to set it up until saturday. don't suppose anyone knows of a reed joiner that uses 6 bolts and goes straight back???
and mike is correct, i have spark and coolant lines are hooked up. i need to set up the rear brake tonight and as long as i can get the carb in there, i should make my first attempt to start it this weekend.

Just for checking to see if it'll run - theres nothing wrong with running just the carb with no filter. I wouldn't ride it around, but on the stand would be fine. If you get antsy grab a uni-pod filter. Are you able to flip the reed valve boot over? It might line up better...
As for the ATF coming out of the other bike - There were guys that did that. It could also be redline oil...

For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction - and sometimes a scar...
Yeah, running it to start it without the filter isn't an issue. unfortunately flipping the boot isn't an option as it is angled so the carb sits level. picture the cylinder is tipped forward, the reed valve sits at a 90 degree angle to the cylinder, then the reed boot forms an angle so when the carb is mounted it sits level. if that makes any sense. so when i flip the boot around i get a really extreme angle for the carb, almost 90 degrees to the way it should sit.

Uni Pod... fixed. What's wrong with that option (just check your plug and adjust jet as needed).
The air box also keeps the filter from getting hit with twigs, boots, etc. And gives the motor a little time if it gets dunked in water.

Well, I'll probably end up going with the pod filter, but for the time being I did make a couple modifications to make the airbox work, but its not perfect. With that being said...... I had her running yesterday! Not running well, but running. It would only run with the choke on so the carb will be coming out and getting anothr good cleaning, that should clear up a big part of how it runs. I also need to figure out whats in there for jets and see if I am even in the ball park of where I should be. i actually have a short clip of it running on my cell phone, but haven't figured out how to get that posted here yet.
now, as far as riding areas, can anyone recommend a place near central mass that is pretty wide open, not too busy and the riding area is close to the parking area? theres a lot i want to shake out on this thing and would like to be close to my tools while i do it.

So, I guess the suggestions are for something like this...

Any other brands people would recommend?

Head over to Hodges Dam in Oxford - it's small, but has a 1/4 mile street ride to a fire road (it's ok to ride the street in this private area). On the fire road you can sort her out. There are some trails to tinker on too. It's not a big place, but pretty ideal for what you're looking to do. Otherwise, it's Franklin or the Berkshires, and that isn't going to help much.
Let me know when you go - perhaps I'll head over with you

that could work. may try to get to the RMV thursday, but not sure yet. if i can get a couple things done to the bike this week, i am considering an initial shake down this weekend, but we'll see.
dave fall off the planet? haven't heard from him in a while. surprised he isn't coming out to southwick.
