for next year... and all the proper gear to hit the ground running... I rode once.. and loved it.
However the biggest obstacle i'm thinking is.. how do you find guys to ride with? I dont have ay friends that ride, much less ride dirty.
Do I just post up here? are there other boards? I'm looking for close to me locales( wilmington) no farther than an hour drive. biggest fear is buying th egear then finding adearth of riding groups.... i'm not a "lone" rider and enjoy the social aspect much more than the specific activity.
I'm going to target a xr250r....thoughts?
hmmmm......
The xr might bore you quickly. If it's an xr you want, grab one of the plated 400's that pop up.
As far as groups, there are some. Netra is made up of a bunch of regional clubs. I recommend joining one.
But yes, also post up here, Advrider, and nedb, although nedb tends to be a little more secretive about what they're up to, if it's not a sanctioned event.
I can't say enough that unless you plan on racing scrambles or other closed course events, you really want something with a street plate.

If you buy a dirt bike this winter, consider buying some studded tires and riding on the frozen ground, or else set up a set of ice tires using screws. If you can get a dirt bike that is registered for the street, you can ride NETRA Turkey Runs & Dual Sport rides. There are about 15 Dirt Bike Clubs that make up New England Trail Riders Association. My son & I joined Berkshire Trail Riders in December last year & NETRA this past Spring. NEDIRTBIKES.COM is another Forum, similar to NEStreetRiders.com that is more for Dirt Bikes, but there is already some overlap with the "Dirty Bastards" section here. NETRA.ORG is their website & they should have the 2015 Events posted shortly after the Sanctioning Meeting in early December. If you go to the NETRA.ORG website, there is a listing of clubs & I'm sure there are a couple in your area. Hare Scrambles & Enduros are very competitive & gives me what I missed when I tried riding dirt, after hanging my road racing leathers up for a season.
I'm definitely looking for a plated one...
So a 400 would be a decent woods bike then? beginner. I'm not the speed sort of guy... something i could work on fairly easily , ride for a year or so then upgrade if I see fit...
I sent this fellow an emai right now....Honda XR250R street legal dual sport
hmmmm......

That don't look half bad. The 400 will give you s little more street legs. And power down low too.
Bob has said more elaborately what I said. The turkey runs and ds rides are great social events, go at your own pace and chug it out.

How much will I regret taking a DR650 on a turkey run?

Ill keep an eye out for axr 400. Definitely street titled. Any reccomendations on gear? Boots pads helmet goggle nothing else right?
hmmmm......
Dirty pants??
Buy the best stuff you can afford. Especially boots. The difference between a $99 pair of boots and a $300+ set of boots is mind bending.

Ok shape now. MT21 going on the front, Michelin T63 for the rear.
Pretty much a dirty noob. Realistically it's going to be a while before I can get a better bike. Turkey runs sound fun, but not if I'm going to be way over my head on it.

Give it a whirl. It's a dr650 so you can always bail onto the road.
You'll probably be fine if you skip some of the hero sections.

I got a 2001 XR400R I'll sell. Looking to get $1900 for it. Needs nothing, ready to ride. Wasn't planning on selling it till spring when there were more people looking, but extra garage space now would be good.

Rocky mtn atv has some pretty stellar "closeout" deals pretty often.
+1 the idea of spending real money on boots.
The xr got a plate?
hmmmm......

Turkey runs are generally more suited to an easier pace than the race. I went to the Jack Frost ride today, :I went alone and found people to ride with. Great time! You will find when you start riding you tend to meet people ad find places to ride. If your in the market for a dirty toy and don't buy KB's or at least look at it you're missing out.
Does NETRA have a dating service
For a 1st dirtbike 250 is the best choice, all you will miss is power wheelies and rear end break out and tree finder

The calculus of hate
It is not that I should win it is that you should lose
It is not that I succeed it is that you fail
It is not that I should live it is that you should die
