I'm moving some earth so i can add on to my shed and want to make good use of the fill. It's a mix of loam and orange clay. I want to make a table top type jump on the main trail into the woods, but don't want to make it to small or to big for the area I have.
What's the best way to make it, trial and error? Not looking to get anyone hurt by creating a monster jump, but I'd like something I can hit with the bike or quad and get a little rush from. I've got about a 80-100 yard straight to work with.
Any tips/ideas?![]()

Hey mark , when I had that skid steer for the weekend I tried to make a whoops section on the woods track , I must not have compacted often enough or enough in general , couple that with a ton of rain , I rode the track a few weeks ago , when i hit the first whoop, it disintegrated and swallowed the front wheel .
so I guess pack it down good .
I have also heard the people use strips of old carpet to keep the launch face from wearing out quickly

I didn't think about the steep face and less steep landing, but now that I think about it that's how the tables were set up at the MX tracks I used to ride. I kinda wanted to be able to hit it in both directions.
No shortage of rocks, could use them as a good base. I've got a lot of projects planned that will generate quite a bit of fill, rather look at/use it for a jump rather than just a pile of dirt
It's hard to say with all the rain, soil around here is just starting to dry out a bit so you can work with it.
The woods track we used to ride near Todd's old house had the carpet ramps, worked pretty good and I don't ever remember having to rework the jump face

When I built my track, all of my jumps have rocks as there base. It uses a lot less fill.
just build it like my buddies yardbaby steps is key

In addition to everything mentioned here (+1 on the rocks for fill, but be sure to cover w/ enough dirt) I'd say berms. An 80-100 yard straight for the approach, jump, landing and runoff isn't a lot. Build a nice berm that you can hammer out of in whatever gear you want to jump in or one below for a quick shift up, so that the lip can be closer to the start of the straight. Going to need a lot of dirt to make the berm & jump quad friendly. Make the landing extra wide unless you're already comfortable coming out of a berm off of a jump on a quad, it's easy to throw yourself off line a bit. Another berm at the end of the straight will eliminate the need to land and then brake as hard.
Yeah, I'll give you baby steps...I'll be baby stepping for 10 years before I grow the balls to "think" about doing jumps like that
I moved a few yards of fill today, got a little ramp about 5' wide, 12' long and about 3' high. Haven't riden it yet, but it looks like I might get hurt trying it![]()

Yeah but you ride MX only, i thought you guys don't like getting your bikes dirty? You're gonna collect some mud and some underbelly dents from the rocks.
Sorry, no pictures yet but i have been working on it some. Still not done with the digging where I am getting the fill from, and I ended up with a lot less so far because of all the rocks and ledge. All in time I guess![]()

sometimes the mx tracks have mud (SUCKS) ahaa. I can deal with mud, I like riding in it other than the cleaning after...but rocks no beuno...unless you bump jump over them or something no thanks!
