Nothing, some orgs just use either word.
Edit: Johnny uses “open”.

I don't see Sportsman listed on the JDay site defining classes, but I see that category on the results page. Either way, would it really matter for the enduro? I don't think JDay has sportsman in their grand prix, but NETRA does. If I remember right it puts you in back of the starting grid, so there's a reason to choose one over the other. Not sure it'll change anything if there's no grid.

Sportsman is a “class” for people that want to go “race” but either not mess with any championships, or don’t want to do the full 2hrs of an a/b race, or whatever.
I’m netra it’s the last line of the c grid. I don’t know where Johnny does his, as he has at least 2 c motos.
Typically sportsman is full of either first timers testing the waters, or fast old guys screwing around, or old dudes that used to be fast trying to recapture some good times at a course they raced before. At least, by my casual observation.

If you race in a class you never know you may come away with some hardware. I've only sone 1 sprint enduro, but it was my favorite type of offroad racing so far. I believe total it's close to, but not quite mileage ridden during a full scramble, but you can ride harder for the sections because its broken up.
A typical c class scramble should work out to be 15-25 miles per the rules/getting lapped by the leader.

I might do it...if so, probably a last minute deal into whatever class is still open. I think reg opens today and classes will likely sell out, if that matters to ya

I just registered.
This will be my first ever off-road race, so total learning/noob event for me. Bike is basically polished and ready. Changing pipe mounts, springs, and seals this week and I'm done.
I'll be in C 250.
