    dirt bike for Bhavesh

looking for a beginner<-> intermediate dirt rider

riding will be on trails (oxford and franklin), and would be nice if I could stuff it in a minivan. No space for trailer, might consider a hitch and carrier

cheap (grand?) = good, but not looking for a project

I was considering the XR200 because they're reliable, beginner friendly, and cheap, but is that going to be enough?

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

For 1000 you can find a nice bike Look around a bit. The bike I have now I picked up for 1200 about 3 years ago. Nice 02 YZ125. Should be able to find a similar deal somewhere out there.

    thanks for the suggestions

it looks like a 125 2-stroke is the one for me

for my application, is there really any difference between the kx125, cr125, rm125 & yz125?

I figure I might as well peruse CL for all of them and just try to find the best deal

I'll see it Matt wants to sell the KX, however if you kill yourself on it I take no resposibility. The thing is NUTS after the rebuild.

KX's are easy to find cheap and worked out. I got mine for next to nothing. Guys that ride honda's love them forever, I have a friend with a Hawk, a CR125 & a damn honda tattoo. they also hold value and are tough to find cheap. Other two, I have no idea. If it were me I'd be looking for something with good suspension, everything else will get worked on and replaced as time goes on anyway

correction: he's in east bridgewater, MA

    NOT new hampshire

he said it's a great condition bike that he put a 140 kit (?) into, stroker kit, barnett clutch and new tires

all of the above has less than 2 hours on it, and he said it's really fast and doesn't want it anymore

I know the basics (does it start/easily, clutch, brakes, frame, how it runs), but is there anything else I should look out for?

I'm going down on Thursday night to check it out, and he's looking for a pit bike for his kid, and will do a partial trade on the XR80

    Re: dirt bike for Bhavesh

you hit the basics. as long as the top end has been done recently, everything else is pretty cheap to fix even if it is bad. checking to make sure the wheels/rotors are straight is a plus, but unless you are going to throw it on a stand and check the run out, your hands are kind of tied. check to see if there are any dents in the rims anyways. look at the forks, see if the seals are weeping at all, but thats a cheap easy fix so not a deal breaker. chain and sprockets are good to look at as well, but again an easy fix. IMO if the chain and sprockets are in good used condition, meaning they look maintained, thats probably a good indicator of how well the owner took care of the rest of the bike.

shake the swing arm/wheel to see any lateral movement, also up and down play. then put on brakes and rock back n forth and see if the headset bearings are roached...that one looks like a good bike for a 99, definitely go check it out

well, that was quick...I might have just impulse bought it...but here it is:

    apparently, this thing is fast!

it starts with almost no trouble at all, but it doesn't idle, so I need to get used to it

Adjustments to fix the idle problem, you should also make sure you have the details on what's done to the engine so that you know what to buy when you need to replace and refresh parts such as top end. Other than that, the bike looks good to go.

    And you're welcome.

thanks a bunch hessogood (and everyone else), you just satisfied another dirt bike rider for life

I did a quick google and it looks like I can make a carb adjustment for it to idle, so I'm going to order the manual and make that adjustment

I've been tinkering with it in the backyard, but it's just a little too loud. It currently has an FMF shorty as a silencer, with what looks like a stock midpipe. Is that known to be a loud can?

Is there any way I can quiet it down? will repacking make much of a difference?

after googling, I was considering to sell the shorty, get an FMF 'Q' or getting a stock silencer. If I wanted a little bit more, I might try the dB snorkel

    Re: dirt bike for Bhavesh

congrats man, ya the idle is just a screw on the left side of the carb. The shorty is pretty loud, the Q series like you mentioned would quiet it down decent but not a ton
