I've been using street lids when playing in the dirt so far, mostly my Arai XD. I decided to get a proper dirt lid instead of abusing my Arai and tried on a bunch of Z1R and HJC lids this weekend hoping to find a good fit.
I couldn't find one that would stay put vertically. I went from large down to a youth large (which scarily, I fit into?!) and had no problems with them locking in for left to right rotation but couldn't find one that resisted rotating up and down if I grabbed the chin bar. I'm not talking about a little wiggle either, I could blind myself with the chin bar OR the top of the helmet, and that was with the chin strap on so tight it was painful.
Is that normal for a dirt lid, or do I have a wonky head that needs a different brand lid?
Try a different brand.
You have a freakishly lil head and long arms!
Did you try it with Goggles on?

i can't think of i dirty lid i've ever had that didn't move vertically some. i can grab the chin bar on all of em, and move it up or down if i choose, but they definitely stay in place while riding. i can't think of one that'd move on its own while bouncing through the woods. currently, i'm using one of these: for better or worse.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
no, it shouldnt move that much. as you sweat, the fit will get worse if it's not sized correctly. like any helmet, over time, the interior pads will also compress a little so don't buy one too loose.
my HJC CL-X5 is a POS but fits me. very stiff interior, hate it after a day of riding.
my Troy Lee Designs Air is amazing. fits me perfect, ultra plush and light, breaths really well.
here's TLDs fitment guide for lids:
1.) Remove all cheek pads from the helmet.
2.) Put on the helmet and make sure it feels comfortable resting on the crown of your head.
3.) Put in the cheek pads, making sure each pad touches your face, with no pressure points.
4.) Test the fit by grabbing the front of the helmet and move your head to the left and right.
5.) If your head moves independently of the helmet you need to use thicker cheek pads.
6.) Install thicker cheek pads in the the helmet and repeat Step 4 until your face does not move inside the helmet. This constitutes a secure fit.
7.) The helmet should be snug but manageable, as the pads will compress 1/3 in size over time.

i should have first asked how much force you were actually using on the chin bar
you just dont want it loose enough to bounce around while riding. you will be able to move it up/down snuggly though. lots of leverage when you grab that bar.

Yea...not as snug as a street helmet but yet a bit of movement is needed...HJC got the job done for me

i dont wear my chin strap crazy tight either. just nice and snug with no major movement when being thrashed around.
you'll see guys yank on the chin bar up or down to drink water so you'll def be able to move the helmet... at first it sounded like it was moving way easy on you.

The Bell Moto 8 fits small and snug. I bought mine on closeout for cheap.
Buy a quick release for the strap for sure.

HJC is a good bet. I got my helmet for 89 bucks about e10yrs ago and it still works mint! Dirt helmets get nasty stinky muddy and just plain dirty. I don't want to spend 500 bucks on a helmet that get's like it does.
But on fit. It's a looser fit than a street helmet. I too barely snug the chin strap and the helmet moves a little bit but not as firm as a street helmet.

Sounds like the shape of your head is just fucked! Maybe buy one that's close and get some of that spray expanding foam to perfect the fit?
That being said, like some said above, they don't fit as snug as a street helmet. I've used Arai and HJC helmets for offroad and it's hard to say what is better. Fit, lightweight and comfort, I like the feel of the HJC a little better, though with the Arai XD it is pretty nice not having the foam goggles stuck to your face, which makes you feel a bit cooler on hot days.
I just picked up a new HJC CL-X6 Frenzy which feels pretty nice![]()

The Frenzy line is what I was trying. Felt good, other than the up and down movement. For giggles, I just tried the same with my XD. I can move the helmet up a bit via the chinbar when strapped on, but not very far. Down I can nearly cover my eyes with the top of the visor opening, but that takes effort.
I also noticed the year of mfg is 2004... guess what lid just became dirt only?Wonder if my goggles will fit in it?
If your interested in a Troy Lee Designs Ill give you a good deal on mine, I don't have any use for it and it's only been used twice.

Friend: man riding this really hurts my balls
Me: Well you're not supposed to sit on your balls!
Kurlon, FYI...
Taskys is having a 'Garage Sale', there's a few lids for real cheap. You'll have to scope sizing/quality but this one caught my eye. i think Seth wears Shift gear, maybe he can chime in on fit/quality. $50 sounds dirt cheap if it fits!
