Husqua-whut?!
Well that changes things a bit. $4k really opens up the options...even $2-$3k. Dont think I'm questioning you though. Ive been guilty of the same thought process.
I mainly push the DR350 since I think its the most well rounded package. Its about the best machine in that $1000-$1500 range when the intent is mild dual sport use. You also identified another short coming of the DR, aftermarket. The DR has been out of production for 14 yrs, so yeah, aftermarket is a little dry.
If you've got a few more $$ to throw here a DRZ might be just what you want. I'd say E or S model would do you well. Unless your heart is set on 17" rubber, maybe go for the SM up front.
You know, that number is bullshit. I think I've been looking at CL ads too much and trying to justify something I really can't. I got some med bills coming and heating oil season is almost here. $1.5-2k on the road is probably much more reasonable. Another $1k over the winter for goodies and upgrades.
I *think* I can pull off an older DRZ400 S or E for that number.
You can pick up an older drz for $15-1700 all day long.

My first off road bike, can be called a dual sport. Plenty fast enough for some road milage if needed, change the gearing if its not. For $950, ride it, figure out if its for you. If not, sell it to the next guy for the same money and be done. Plate able cuz of age, reliable as hell, too. I'm way bigger than you, and it worked fine for me to learn on. My .02 cents.
Go buy that thing yesterday. It's essentially a drz400e with the hotter cams. If you're gonna get a dry, that's what you want. And buy the thumper talk case savers now too.
Lemme know if you're going this weekend. I might be able to join you for the ride down to CT.
If it's a plated Klx400r, that's the same as an e. The ad doesn't really say, and I may have jumped to that conclusion naturally, as that's what I used to have.
I misread. Seems there were two KLX400 models. Bottom line is I don't think I really care.
Found two more DRZ400's in Maine listed at $1800 each. One is less than half as far away. I may call him first in the AM and see if he'd match. But having the odd-duck Kawi would be cool.
Odd duck is cool, until you need parts. Then normal duck becomes sooper cool.
Ignore me. I'm not buying a dirt bike.
It's only odd because of the stickers and graphics. This motorcycle was made by Suzuki from the same parts on the same line. It's weird. They did this with the KLV1000 (rebranded Suzuki DL1000) in some markets too. Weird, I know.
ahh, yes that price range changes the search results dramatically...the klx is a good price, although a good drz around that range would do well too...and both would wreak havoc on the air cooled dr350s
buy it already...just make sure you get the one that's in best mechanical shape...the newer/lowest mileage ones that were maintained are best...issue with bikes in this price range is it could have 20,000 miles or 2,000 miles and people ask teh same price :dunno:
The same like an SV is the same as a strom?
Seriously ignore me. Just asking questions. I know negative infinity about dirt bikes.
No, the same as Chippertheripper is Douglas Gordon Hawthorne III. Same EXACT asshole, different name.
A klx says suzuki on the frame. It's a rebadged drz, no joke.
Ehl oh frickin' ehl...
I've already admitted to anyone that would listen that I had my head way up my ass on the SV/Strom thing. But that time there were like different parts 'n stuff involved. This time I think I'm right. Same parts assembled in the same pattern with different colors and stickers => same fuggin' bike.
I thought you raced dirt bikes once or some such?!
One more edit: I think real dirt bike types would be mildly offended if you called a DRZ/KLX a "dirt bike".
It's more of a dirtbike than a dr200. :teehee:
Kuwahara? Had to google it. Wild.
V-Strom vs the rest.. maybe one of these days I'll be able to toss you the keys to a V-Strom and then one of these things back to back. But it is probably a little like if your CBR had the same ergos as your wing. We're talking ~300 lbs vs ~500 lbs.
