If he chooses 1" screws, he had better have a *new* tire, with tall knobs (read - soft terrain). Even then, he risks a puncture. 3/4" is the longest I have been able to safely use, without carcass reinforcement. JMO.

Go with Tires Studded Canadian stlye. Not AMA legal
I had a blast out on Kb's, Bill, and Jim bikes. These things rocked.

well...the last time I was googling, I found there was heads as tall as you wanted:
the following are called mf44 (www.mf44.ca)
thick threads on these 1/2" screws:
these have a solid head (not slotted), so maybe it will last longer?
these use a use a nylon lock nut on the inside of the tire...I'd imagine a very, very strong liner is needed to keep this from puncturing the tube...
but now I know why the MF1 ones I posted earlier, also have a fine thread. They must also use a nylon lock nut on the inside of the tire despite not being pictured with one:
if you *really* want it to stay in without a liner, try grip studs...but they are better suited for trail riding than ice riding

Andy had those 1/2" screws on and left about 1/2 of them on the Ice. they won't last.

I have a set of MT21s (21" front, 18" rear) with screws on both left/right side of the tires for sale. Very good condition. Selling for a friend who is moving to California.

They are ColdCutter screws, the AMA legal size, not the longer head Canadian screws. No liners. $100 if you pick them up in Raymond NH. That's cheaper than buying a pair of tires and a box full of screws and making them yourself.
I also have an 18" rear tire, a real Kenda Ice tire with a liner and 1.25" Canadian screws. Currently set up for left side, but comes with a box of screws to complete the right side if you want. Never mounted on a rim. $100
Send me an email at motorhead9876 at the yahoo dot com, as I don't check the forum too often. Thanks

Pete let me know when you are ready. I can you get you a real set of canadian ice tires for a fraction of the 700 for a set of new ones. Don't waste your time with the gold screws. For the time, and effort of purchasing, studding, fixing flats, being frustrated because you're getting smoked by guys with "real" tires. You will thank me when you are having fun and actually hanging and battling with folks instead of wasting your time spinning and going nowhere. once you ride a bike with real tires you will thank me!!!

Balls, giant fucking balls.
I used to vote this method until I ripped all the screws AND knobbies off in half a day. I was rising them hard, but nothing crazy I don't think. There's nothing like the pro tires. I might have my crf250 for sale, with the spare runs and ice tires soon though. Too many things in the garage.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

I can't wait. This makes the off season bearable. After october 7th, deep freeze baby.
The thing about recreational ice riding is that the conditions are always changing. Sometimes there is snow on the ice, and good tall knobs are needed. Sometimes the ice is rock hard, and you have a hard time finding grip. Sometimes it is "soft" and anything will work well. You will get tired of turning left, if you ride on a track where that is the only way allowed, though. I used to love leaving the track, and "going rogue" with 5th or 6th gear, mile long, feet up power slides around the lake, and practicing jamming the back wheel into snow berms at speed to see if I could get the tire to spit the snow over my head. Riding in deep snow can cause other problems - my XR600 had its air box packed solid with snow. The carb area will always pack up and sometimes cause problems as well.
For winter trail riding, I have found that the best time to go is early in the morning, when the snowmobile tracks have had a chance to melt a bit, and re-freeze over night.
I eventually got tired of working so hard to have my fun, and bought a couple of 4WD ATV's.
For the guys that lost the 1/2" screws - those are only for the front tire, unless you are helping out somebody with a bald rear tire... Any of the screw in carbides, or any carbides at all are for off road, trail or MX use, and not designed for the pond and lake ice riding you are planning on doing.
Last year, the track at the Sturbridge Rod & Gun Club was pretty neat to watch, but as a spectator, I was bored after an hour or so. The track was shorter than I expected, and the races themselves are pretty short (8 laps or so?). It was fun to watch the little kids go at it, the stud-less ATV class, and the hack class.

A lot has to do with how seriously Pete wants to take this. To "give it a whirl" can mean pretty much anything. If he intends on actually racing in organized events, or wants to run at the front of the pack at semi-serious gatherings, then the racing specific tires are pretty much required. If he just wants to lay down some slides, and have fun goofing around, then pretty much any knobby/screw set up will do just fine. He can always tweak the set up between outings by adding screws or re-arranging the pattern.
When ever I was ice riding, and playing around on an oval track, there was always somebody who would eventually show up, and kick my ass. That was always a part of the fun. Last year, on lake Wickabog, there was a guy on a lowered CR250 that was able to get unbelievably low, and just lay the smack down on everybody. He had Kenda's, and what looked like a 19" front rim. So, like I said, it all depends how serious you want to get.
