funny, i just heard back from the builder of the kit. (we've had a long-running PM thread) he wants to swap my head for a newly cut one and correct base gasket. sounds like you guys were on the same track
guess i'll wait to measure squish until the new head arrives. he feels pretty confident mine was in the early batch that came back too tight.
Beta 200RR
recut head arrived yesterdayi'll be trying it out tomorrow with a 50/50 race/pump mix, new plug and swapped coil/wire/cap. fingers x'd.
Beta 200RR
great looking bike, good luck!
thanks! bike feels great right now but I'll have to see tomorrow after a few hours run time.
interesting comparing the two head designs. deeper dome area on this one with different taper points.
Beta 200RR
pics of the domes on each head?
nope, already installed to test it. maybe when I pull it off for paint. very subtle but def different shapes.
I should note squish between the two for reference. still running the 0.7 base gasket, no detectable low end loss so far.
I also leaned out the carb rod and richened up the power jet. solid idle and crisp revs.
Beta 200RR
hmm. That's ok I guess. I'm changing the head on my bike soon, so this is all interesting to me.
Have you read the cylinder head section of Jennings Two-Stroke Tuners Handbook? Some very useful info there on higher compression ratios and jetting.
the latest tweaks were a success. 50/50 gas, no ping, slightly less bottom end with the new head. top end I tuned in although a little rich.
i experienced the same mid-day, upper rev sputtering but not as intense, turned the power jet out another 1/2 turn (richer) and it disappeared. win.
seems like it's just fine tuning from here. I think I can go a little leaner on the rod still, just a hair.
I'm going to try 50/50 AV/pump or unleaded 104/pump next. got way too addicted to that crazy crisp and powerful low-mid when you're climbing nasty stuff. that area was a tad softer today in that situation.
B440, no, haven't read that book yet. I'm just going by other reports from similar engine/carb setups and seat of the pants feel right now.
Beta 200RR
B440, I found PDF copies of that Tuning Handbook, thanks for the heads up!
Beta 200RR
You're welcome. Good info if you're trying to tune a bike yourself. Good to hear the new head is working.
