I need some, but first I need to be educated. What should I look for, or avoid?
Thanks.

Something like this is versatile and have better all day comfort than a full on MX boot. Yet still provide good support and protection

Don't know anything about the multipurpose boots but if you want full MX boots my experience is that Gaerne boots are very protective, very comfortable and last a good while. I specifically have the SG10 model.

My shortlist includes the Gaerne and Sidi boots. Still haven't pulled the trigger though.
The sg10 and sidi crossfire are the industry standard.
The gaerne is considerably less expensive, but has less replacable parts.
Buy quality boots. Stay away from the a* tech 3, because they'll be spent by the time you go on your trip.

Gaerne SG10 for me as well.

I bought MX boots and they have air vents. I do trail riding and I go thru big puddles and such and my feet end up wet. I didn't realize that when I bought them. Just a heads up if that helps.
SG12's here... i call them Dirty Slippers. best boots i've ever owned, comfy from Day 1. BUT, the biggest let down... water.
a friend of mine wears Sidi Agueda's and loves them. nice mix of DS/Off-Road construction. imagine Crossfire 2s without the superTech or superPrice.

Thanks for the replies, good info here. I'm looking for a boot fit for the woods more than a MX track, and not vented to keep my feet dry. I had Gaerne street boots and they quickly fell apart, but I picked up some for the track and love 'em. Maybe I'll check out Cycle Gear after work. Not sure what they have in stock, but online they carry Fox, Gaerne, sidi, A*, Thor, etc.

For the woods I'd be looking for a boot with a stiff sole (like the SG10) that will protect your foot from being crushed if caught between the bike and a tree or rock.
I'm an A* fan, mostly because I have had great luck with them, they fit awesome and are comfortable. I've also always had the higher end Tech8 and 10 series, so not sure what their lesser models are like. Mt Tech 8's are vented, if fact I think they are called Tech8 Light, and I thought the regular Tech8 was not vented? I also have an older pair of Tech10's that are not vented. I use these if I know it's going to be wet, because they keep my feet dry with normal riding....and if I don't fall or stop in the middle of a water crossing. The removable bootie in the tech 8 and 10's is the trick in my opinion to keeping the funk smell out that everyone complains about. Just pull them out, toss them in with the wash, and always have clean and fresh feet.
One thing to keep in mind, none of them are fully water proof and most are only semi water proof up to the ankle. Over the boot riding pants are one of the best ways to help keep your feet dry...or duct tape the top of your boot to your pants if your pants go inside the boot

Tried the Fox Comp5 (size 12) and A* Tech 7s (11 & 12, neither one was quite right) at Cycle Gear today. There seemed to be a big difference in quality, but the tech 7s were nearly 2x the price. The didn't have any Gaerne's in stock. does anyone know if the Gaerne off road boot sizing runs about the same as their race boot sizing? I found some SG10s for less than the Tech 7s and was thinking about ordering them today.

Another Gaerne SG-10 fan here. I had A*'s for years, but they just never held up and they all leaked water *badly* from day 1. My SG-10's are now a year old, and they are still very waterproof.
motorcyclecloseouts.com has some great deals.
Never worn the Gaerne race boots but I wear a size 13 shoe/normal boot and my 13 Gaernes fit me very well.
The SG10 is waterproof?
