Ouch is right. Hope is was ok.
Do you compress the suspension just before lift off? Jumping is a mystery to me. Whats the proper technique?
The first thing everyone told me when I started riding dirt was never, ever, ever let off the gas going off a jump haha. I was getting semi comfortable with it last year... still need a lot of confidence building though.
If you hit pause just as the front wheel hits you can see it bend instantly.
I love the shadow of him practically off the back of the bike.
I knew what to expect before I even watched the video, but still...wow!
I hope he's alright!
It looked to me like he chopped the throttle right before take off. That is the wrong approach for that type of jump. Jumps are usually best handled, at first anyway, with neutral throttle - no accel or decel. If you have to, just a bit of acceleration is better than any decel. As one progresses, you can apply different techniques to each jumps particulars: flat landings, or downhill landings, short run ups, heavily rutted, short landings into corners, etc.. Never mind the whole "Bubba Scrub" thing....that comes later.
I almost did the same thing last night on the track. I was tired and miss judge my timing and the front end just dropped in the air. Lucky is was a sandy landing and I was able to ride out of it but it was not pretty.
ouch! hope he was OK.
i have some classic tape somewhere of a friend of ours who traded bikes with someone. he was a fast, confident and talented MX rider but the bike he borrowed randomly BOGGED off a lip of a long double... the result was the same. it was so painful to watch, even though the cameraman was giggling.

aha here is one I took running into the back of another bike that didn't hit a triple jump thing, skip to 1:20 or so, the lens got all F'd up due to cold/hot weather and moisture but you can see me eat it onto my head aha

All depends on the jump. The steeper the launch, the more throttle it takes to counter the rebound of the suspension. Once you get some experience, you can read a jump and just pretty much know what it will take. Until then, just keep trying a jump, increasing speed a little each time. You'll get the feel of it.
