This will be our 6th year racing as a family. We started July 2021 at Hemonds in Maine with the JDay offroad series. We only make 4-5 events every year, but we always talked about doing a full season and making a run for points. The first year we planned on doing a full season, I broke my collarbone in 2024. This year will be my first season back, but Jday has changed their series to all along the East coast... we are not driving to Florida, so we are switching gears. This will be everyone's first time doing strictly Motocross, we have always done GP style racing. We have joined Maine Motocross and will do the full season with them.
2026 Schedule

May 16 - C - Mx207
June 6 - A - Hemond’s Motocross Park
June 13 - B - Mx207
June 20 - A - Wheeler Spring MX
July 18 - C - Hemond’s Motocross Park
August 1 - B - Dirt Side MX
August 8 - D - MX207
August 15 - B - Wheeler Spring MX
September 12 - C - MX207
September 19 - A - Hemond’s Motocross Park
October 3 - A - Wheeler Spring MX
The kids bikes are pretty ready, I already took off my closed end bark busters but I still need to tape up my lights and remove my kickstand.
Any advice from anyone who has done motocross before?
In my opinion, the track part of Jday events is the easiest part, and I'm looking forward to my kids not wadding themselves out in the woods anymore. Also looking forward to live engine starts, the kids can struggle with the dead engine starts.

that's awesome! hope you all have a great season! ... no advice other than i'd look for an MX plate, remove the light completely so you're not replacing it ... and to get on that line and have fun!

My first race was in 1984 at Central Village. Someone else's dad said "just finish the race." It was only a 4 lap novice race and I'd been riding dirt for 10 years, but a mud track and we all dropped our goggles early in the moto. His suggestion struck me as odd, but during that first moto with all the other bikes (full gates), and the footpeg deep mud he was right. I did finish but the adrenaline was pumping.
Since you have already done JDay races I don't think "just finish the race" is necessary for me to say. Iguess my only suggestion would be have fun, and be down near the starting gate area in plenty of time to not have to rush.

If you need an extra set of hands/tools at the MX207 events, I'm literally just down the road, FYI.
I've thought about this same idea - haven't done a strictly MX event before.
Haven't done any events in the last year or two, and now that JDay has changed up their structure a bit, not in a rush to jump in the pool again.
They do have a "New England Series" running concurrent, but I think you need AMA membership and a few other things now too.
The current theory is to run a few NETRA events this year (HS, Enduro, TR), and to get the kiddo into a PW scramble on his crf50.
Wanted to last year, but the summer was filled with other things and over before I could blink.
I'll be curious to see how you like it and how everything goes.
What are the letters on each of the events?
Thanks, I hope we have a great season too! I am NOT mentally or physically prepared!
Thanks, we are definitely past that stage of "just finishing", well, I am still happy to just finish!
I appreciate it! We plan to go down to Funky Bow and check it out too.
I remember it being so scary when they first started on the little bikes, feels like your just throwing your children to the wolves!
The letters are the run order, they change it up for each event. We will see how that goes, I printed off the rules and schedule today so we have it handy.
Another new thing with moto, we actually will get a practice run too!
ffFFFUUNNN! good luck, crew!

You always gotta start with the good news, so the good news is it isn't broken.
Made it like 5 turns in the PRACTICE session, had a bike absolutely smash into me, flying through the air hands bouncing off his spokes as we slid, twisted my left leg around backwards, thought it was broke, ended up able to get up after a minute and ran away from the pain a bit. Ive piled 800mg of ibuprofen to me, but it's hard to walk. Don't think I can even run my motos. Definitely sprained ankle with some damage to the shin bone, bloody elbow and shin, ripped my raincoat, no bike damage somehow.
Daughter was up to race first. Asked her if she was in second, she said yes, asked her to let out the clutch a little to confirm, got the, "DAD, it's in second". Gate drops... Neutral. She makes it 100 yards out after she gets it started and bike stalls and won't start. Eventually got going but bike kept dying, she pulled off on the white flag lap. Bought a spark plug on site, seems to be running better.
Son is up next...
Fuck me, wanted to ease back into racing after 2 years, not have the worst crash I've ever had in the first minute of the practice session....

Hey bud, just saw this. I decided last year to do my first full season of mx at winchester nh. Some how ended up following the NEMX series. It's been fun. Lots to learn.
I'll be at mx207 on the 16th. I usually race 30c and 40c.

I think the gate drop and the start we're the two biggest things I had to learn. Trying to not back off at the first corner is big. Some of my other racing disciplines have helped, but mx is its own beast. Getting comfortable with the jumps was another thing.

Daughters second moto was botched too, her bike died and wouldnt start. I ran over and the choke was one. She only got 3 of 4 laps each moto due to bike issues so get got 2 DNF. Looking at the competition, I think she can run mid pack on a good running bike, the top girl is a ripper.
Son got 3rd and 3rd. He rode well, but the top 2 riders are VERY fast. I think #1 was clearing most all the jumps.
I got xrays sunday, its definitely not broken, but so swollen, painful, and purple today. The lady at the hospital said, "Well, don't quit!" and it made me feel better. In a pretty bad headspace about all this.

Fuck man, sorry about the crash but damn good news about the boy and the girl will be looking good after sorting the bike. My boy had his first track meet this last weekend and I'm getting the stoke for him.

I can resist everything but Pete's mom.
3 entries complete. I hope this weekend goes better....
Supposed to rain Thursday and Friday then be 77 and sunny Saturday.
I'm skipping the zoo of a practice session this time.
Registered last night. Doing 30+C and 40+C. I'll be up late tomorrow night.

Staff are friendly, you've got a couple options for food right near by, it's got normal Maine 'dirt' plus a sandbox area, portions out in the open, some more 'in the woods', I enjoy it too. I think the only 'friendlier' / less technical track I've been to is Hemonds, I can't think of any section there you can screw up by being too fast OR too slow? Freaking picturesque spot too.
Wow, another tough and crazy weekend. My head was really not into it. We got packed up Thursday, and I woke up Friday morning with a cold. Didn't sleep for shit Friday night, woke up to a hot hot hot day Saturday. I did NOT go out in the practice session (there were over 100 bikes?!?!?!?) and I'm so glad I didn't. Because this event was combined with NEMX, there was a TON of riders. (the C250 class was like 54 bikes?). I really was not feeling it and was considering bailing and not racing, I really didn't want to run at the same time as 40A and 40B. sdog really saved the day and gave me a good pep talk and I also learned 40C got their own moto. I got out there and everyone took off and I was on my own. Luckily I could just use the open track to get back into it after 2 years and 2 injuries. The ankle isn't quite healed up yes, but it felt fine on jump landings, the worst was dragging a foot in the corners. I survived the first moto and felt much better. Second moto I got a better start and actually got ahead of someone, they were on my back door the entire race but I held them off. I was exhausted and had bad arm pump because with someone on my tail I definitely rode more than I had gas in the tank. I shaved 10 seconds off per lap from first moto to second moto.
Daughter was running well but had a bad lowside on her last lap and had to pull off. one of those awful moments where you're standing there waiting for her to come around the corner and she never comes, then they release the next moto and you still haven't seen her. She is okay, just very sore. Her second moto, she ran very well and looked great out there. There were some VERY fast girls out there.
Son did a great job and was flying. His starts were garbage but I think we are all trying to get used to the gate drop.
In the end I got 13/14
Daughter got 13/15
Son got 8/11.
The #1 bike in my sons class runs Loretta Lynns, so tough competition out there. The whole family was fast, Zink was the last name.
I'm glad to get that first race out of the way, I think if I had another bad crash, it would have been a career ender.
We have a few weeks off then 3 weeks in a row in June....
oh, and My best lap was 3:11, Daughter 3:07, Son 3:01, they both beat me![]()
