Just stop falling over, the bike won't seem so heavy.

Who told?! Baaaah.. I hate being a foregone conclusion!
Actually Joel and the guys came through with some more quality advice. I think I got better today.
I had a couple of the most amazing saves today. At least they looked amazing from where I was sitting.
I don't know if it's the machine or the rider, but whoops SUCK!

Whoops are one of those skills where you have to build a bridge between being afraid to open the throttle and being afraid to let the throttle go. There's a few other elements, but this is the biggest hurdle.

I agree. Grip with the knees. Less chance of swappage.
Here's one mans take on it:

That advice is assuming you are riding way up in the revs like kids do these days. It's important not to be in too LOW a gear either. Much more likely to swap if the drivetrain is not loaded a bit in my experience. If nothing else, I have LOTS of experience in soft whoops. Many 4th gear highsides, spectacular kartwheels, bikes to the chest, and even a few good passes. LOL.
I have the KLX geared all wrong. I cannot lift the front at will. I have to really, really work to lift it. I spent almost all of yesterday in 1st. 2nd bogged too much at my pace. Last year I could carry 2nd, but the bike was geared lower then.
Sharing one machine between dirt, street, and track-days seems to have its disadvantages.

Yeah. Different strokes for different folks. I like multi-purpose. This machine has served nicely as an intro to the dirt bike, dual-sport, and sumo genres. Worth every penny and then some. I'm perfectly okay with some compromise now and then. Especially with something I'm not able to use every day.
I think it has taught me a lot about what I want out of my next machine.

the other problem with the whoops there is that they are sand. so going slow and rolling over them has the huge disadvantage of not being able to steer in the sand. going fast is how to get through the sand AND the whoops, but the whoops are so spread out that youd really need to be flying to stay on top of them.
you dont have enough adjustment to put a larger sprocket on the rear or smaller on the front when you change the dirt wheels over

I always told my buddies when I geared my lc4 to the moon that the bike is geared fast, now I must go fast.
Going slow means smoking the clutch, so it's just no longer an option.
Like the drz it had a puny cv carb, so you had to give it 2 weeks notice to open the throttle, which added to the fun.
It's a learning curve, and it can be pretty steep AT FIRST if you're getting into this stuff later in life. I don't mean to give the impression that you gotta have this or that to go out and have fun. The best bike to ride is the one you own. So give it hell, and the most important thing (for me) is to keep pushing ones self.

I do not have enough adjustment. I have the biggest rear sprocket on the dirty wheels and the smallest on the road wheels that I could use the same chain with. I was running a bigger dirty sprocket and adding another link via a 2nd master. That lasted exactly one change. It is a pain in the ass to press a master out without destroying it. And I'm unwilling to run 2 chains or keep a case of masters on hand. So for now, I'll live with the compromised gearing. It is what it is. And really, it isn't that bad.
This motorcycle could burst into flames and I wouldn't cry that hard financially. In that respect, it is arguably one of the best motorcycles I've ever owned.

Even if you pulled the motor and had somebody rebuild it for you, this still looks decent for an old bike.

Chip. I either love you or hate you. Can't decide which right now.

Trust me, if I had the extra $ (my track bike was gone) I wouldn't have posted that link.

It ended up being a decent morning and after about 12:30 turned to slick snot. By then we were all just tooling along so no major incidents. The whoops are definitely a love hate thing for me, great when I hit them and suck when I swap up and cart wheel into the woods like on last years ride. Rolled them all this year as the 300 spools up a lot more, need to get used to the new nuts. Great ride for the two other people that showed, the rest of y'all suck.
Now bring on the ice!
