covering lights

does anyone know of alternatives to using ducttape on your lights? Even with the lights unplugged, that crap is gonna be a bitch to get off the lenses and plastic. Any companies make stuff thats suface friendly to a bike? Thanks

ive used painters tape which comes off no problem, but i think it is preffered to use duct tape since it sticks a little better. ive never had an issue getting the duct tape off though.

Duct tape is fine, i've used it at every trackday i've attended. Take it off slow & it comes off pretty clean. Yes, it leaves some residue, but juse use the tape you pulled off, dab it on the residue & it takes it off.

Painters tape IS a decent alternative, but doesn't stick as well, takes longer to put on (not as wide as duct tape) & will come right off if it gets damp.

A soft rag combined with this shit will remove adhesive residue.

I always preferred to remove my lights/signals etc completely. That way if a stint on the side happened it would be a little less expensive.

FYI...

Painters tape has officially been proven NOT to work.

The purpose of the tape, in addition to blocking your BRAKE LIGHT, is to hold the plastic lens together if you crash.

Otherwise, it shatters and makes the clean up harder.

Someone crashed (not at our event) with painters tape and the pieces were all over the place.

The painters tape is still on the lens... just cuz there's duct tape over it doesn't mean it holds the pieces any better... if it breaks free from the bike it can still let pieces fly...

suck it up & use duct tape, it's not a big deal to get it off - 9 trackdays & counting and I haven't had an issue getting it all off w/o much trouble.

As others have said, there are NUMEROUS cleaners that will take any residue off in no time.

Or... find an alternative... there may be something out there between painters and duct.

The whole concept of painters tape is to NOT STICK... exactly opposite of the goal we're trying to achieve.

Firefly you are so difficult! Go get duct tape from Walmart, it sticks good but is not the duct tape brand and pulls off easy with little residue.

I know the duct tape is inevitable, Just tryin to figure out away around it. If I find any alternatives that effectively work like the ducttape does in the event of spill, I'll post it for all those who rather not use the duct-tape, if there is anyone.??..

If it is really that big of a deal for you to put duct tape on your lights and then remove it after the track day then I am pretty sure that Tony would accept the 3M clear adhesive material that people use as a paint protector on the front of their cars. If you wrapped all your directional lenses, headlight and tail light with that material then your lenses would probably stay together pretty well in a crash.

Now don't let the fact that applying that 3M material to a surface with multiple compund curves is a royal pain in the ass turn you away from this after all putting duct tape on your lights and then peeling it off after the day is over would be far more labor intensive

Mirrors... don't want people looking back.

Brake lights... can get annoying or distracting to the follower.

In racing, I think the theory is that you can use the brake light to "throw off" a competitor behind you.

You can drag the brake making the light come on while actually accelerating still, etc.

For track days, I've thought it over and considered allowing clear tape, but figured I would stick with the NHIS rules instead.

You could also say that if someone was following a faster rider & sees where they're braking, they could think "well if he can do it, so can i" which could lead do someone getting in over their head.

If you use the duct tape just unplug the headlamps so that the light does not come on and the tape will come off easily. If you leave the lights plugged in it will make the glue bake from the heat and it will be a bitch to remove. I always use duct tape with no problems with the glass lenses on the FZR-1000 and the acrylic lenses on the wife's ZX10-R with no problems....
