I know there are some tech savvy folks who have portable gps units rigged up for lap times at particular tracks.
Is it hard to do? You know, if your not a nerd?![]()

No problems, love mine. I had to read the directions three times, but otherwise not overly complicated.
(dedicated GPS lap timer - Starline). It is amazing the info you can get out of the thing....at any point on the track...speed and if braking/coasting/accelerating.

That's right, back to a 2 cylinder, 3 cylinder, and a 4 cylinder.
Get out while you can

I use a Garmin Edge Gps. It’s not a Starline but it does what I want it to do. I don’t race but I want to chart my progress. It is actually designed as a fitness training GPS for bicycles. The entry level Edge 201 can by Googled-Up on the internet starting at $180. The 301 includes heart rate monitor and cadence, and the new 705 adds color and mapping, routing and $$.
It is all GPS data, so no tach, or engine data. Uses internal lithium-ion batteries for 12hrs and the included handle bar mount/zipties gets it onto the triple tree.
What it will do:
Store and display lap times based on a user set GPS point such as a start/finish line.
Pause the timer when you stop or drop below a set speed(user defined).
I can display and store: Current speed, Max speed, Avg. Speed, Elevation, Lap times, Avg. Lap time, Distance log, Number of laps, Time of Day
Heart Rate; current, avg, lap and zone data with the 301.
Customizable data screens, display what I want.
USB download, Waterproof.
The unit also stores data points or tracklog info that you can download to your computer and drop into Garmin Training Center (free download from Garmin). You can see your tracklog and track points, overlay laps, click on each data point to display speed, elevation, acel/decel, heart rate if applicable, for each data point and display it as a graph as well as all of the above data. The fastest setting/resolution for trackpoints is every second and will store 3.5 hours of data at that setting. Remember it was designed for bicycle speeds and is usually set up for 10 mph dynamics not 110.
It’s also dual use (bicycle) so it’s easier to sell to your accountant. You can use it to keep track of your off-season training regimen on your bike while getting ready for 09 just like the pros.
Attached is a screen shot of Training Center with a lap from Grattan last year. No heckling.
