What would be an "economical" back protector to use for a track day? Anyone what to give a review of theirs? I plan to enroll in a track day at Loudon this season. I have a jacket, gloves, and helmet that will pass. I plan on ordering boots and pants(that will zip to my jacket) before spring. The only other requirement I saw was a hard back protector.
I'm trying not to break the bank on this. I'm not looking for cheap though. If I have to suck it up and spend a lot for one, so be it. I won't go without being fully equipped.
Lastly, I'm not a big guy. 5' 9" or so tall but not very heavy... It was recommended when I bought my jacket to order a woman's jacket as it might fit me better than a men's. They swore up and down that no one would know the difference, but I would! So I ordered a men's and had it tailored
Back on topic, I know there are a lot of racers on here and track day goers. What do you recommend? Thanks!
Any of the dainese ones are good. get one that looks like a turtles back. Can be had for under $100 on ebay. Try newenough.com as well. they have very in-depth reviews on their site and they are well respected sellers.
The Teknic one works ok and is not expensive. If I get a new set I'll sell you mine.

I might take you up on that. Any idea if/when you'd be getting something new?
Does anyone have any opinions of the Icon Field Armour Vest or Alpinestars Bionic Back Protector?
Last summer I proved, unfortunately, that the Teknics works.![]()

I am looking at some Impact Armour. Custom made but $300. Ouch. but worth it.

What model Teknic armor are you guys using?
How much ya wanna spend? You can get a cheap Teknic for like 60 bucks... or you can get the GOOD stuff which can run upwards of 300 bucks like Doc said. I've got the Impact Armor Chest & Back protector stuff he's lookin at & it's fantastic.
As for what kind, as long as it's CE approved & has hard plastic to guard against punctures it should pass just about any track day organizations inspection.

I have a bohn back protector.... its awesome. I did break my foot while wearing it once though so I can't say its perfect.
Thanks for all the information. It's a big help.
Can anyone correct my horrific spelling for the title to this thread? Just in case someone wants to search for this? Can I do this myself?
I only came up with three threads when I looked.
And yes, I did spell that search right!
What model Bohn?
One consideration not to discount is how much room you have in your
leathers for the protector.
For me I had to try many kinds on before I found one that
didn't interfere with my arm movement. Having difficulty
moving around while on the bike can be a big safety issue!
I went with a T-Pro Forcefield. About $120.
See this webikeworld review vs. Bohn

Does any place in southern NH or norther MA carry a few different back protectors to try on?
Moto Market in Acton, MA has most Dainese models to try.

Icon Field Armor Vest
A wonderful Fit that does not inhibit movement. I wanted something that was snug like a vest and without a doubt this fit the bill.

I like the ones VANSON makes. they look like an armadillo backs. I have one in my jacket.
The one Alpinestars makes fits in my A* jacket but man, it looks ghetto. Supposed to be honeycomb or something. looks like it cost $3 to make.
Anyhow, if you see a VANSON one used or online for cheap, I'd get it, you will dig it.

Oh geez, I'm about to go against Gino...
I've got the Icon Field Armor Vest. It's an OK back protector, the chest protection is nothing to write home about. It's major shortcoming in my view is the use of metal loops right on top of your shoulders. If your leathers fit anywhere near properly, those loops get driven down into your shoulders, gets pretty uncomfortable real quick. The alternative is to wear the vest over your leathers, but some people raise a concern that it may come off in a bad crash, so that's something to consider.
If Icon changes the upper strap setup, it'll be perfect.
No problem Josh.
It is strictly a back protector.
Not every shoe fits every single person. Try em on and see what feels good and go with it. Kind of like Helmets as well. Go by fit and not by price. I know it tought to forget the $ aspect.

If you had shoulders instead of twigs it would work fine.
Do some military presses or something man!!

I just got the T-Pro Forcefield armour from the UK and the shit is top-shelf. I can't wait to ride in it and hope I never have to test it. This is the top-rated stuff on the market (based on multiple mag tests). Check out this private consumers review here, going up against the Bohn and Teknic offerings http://piratesk12site.net/backprotector.htm
Also:
And here I am modeling it. As you can see, you get full circumference protection when combined with the chest protector. At $240 total, I'd say it's a good deal.
