I think the question is the value of raw materials. Once the chicken has been slaughtered (for which you did not charge) cleaned, transported, seasoned, cooked and placed on display for sale, only THEN is the value $5. But maybe it wasn't a roaster, maybe it was a laying hen. That involves a more complicated set of calculations, taking into account lifespan and egg quality which would need to be adjusted for using actuarial tables.
If it was a rooster, they should pay you.

Just to be clear, my statement above was a hypothetical conversation between the alleged chicken hit and run motorist, and the owner of the chicken.

I have never in my life personally killed any chicken by any method, that I am aware of.

I've eaten enough chicken that I've caused quite a few to be killed by others, though.
