I rode it last season.
The issue is that I tore a ligament in my left knee playing lacrosse in college. That was a long time ago - 1975. It's held up well through a lot of activities (like being an Army paratrooper, aerobics instructor, etc etc), and in fact I play in an over 50 hockey league and an over 40 lacrosse league. But I've lost some range of motion when the knee is bent up all the way, and that has gotten worse.
It hurts when I sit on it and put the ball of my foot on the pegs. But "warming up" the knee with some heat and exercise may make it OK. I'm going to register the bike for the road an ride it to work a couple of times and see how it feels. If it's not possible, I'll sell the SV and get something bigger like the Bandit, another V-Strom etc.
The SV only has about 2,000 miles on it and I bought it used so it's not going to be a big deal to sell it. It's going to be a wicked nice bike for someone if I do sell it. My son is only 8 and it's not worth keeping for him.

How much did you raise your seat height? I raised mine a little over an inch. It really made my knees much happier. It also made it easier for me to get my upper body down. I find it easier for me to move around on the bike in general.
Last season I used the stock seat. It was tight so I had a seat made:
But the Gel seat seems to be thicker still.

Not a close up but here you can see the lift kit that I made for the stock seat.
Enough shenanigans. Just go grab a big motard. Sm610, 690smc, or one of them über fancy 990motardish things. You can thank me later. (by letting me take a spin on it)

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
So it appears my left knee has now degraded enough that I can't comfortably ride it even with the built up seat. Ironic since I bought it from a guy who had injured his knee.
The SV market seems pretty price conscious and the conventional wisdom is to take off all aftermarket parts to sell. Especially with the Penske costing around $900, this seems to make sense.
Think I should take the Penske off and put the stock shock back on, or try to sell it as it sits? I haven't installed the SS brake lines or tail. Bike still has less than 2,000 miles on it. I'd leave the cartridge emulators in place either way: not that expensive and more effort to remove.
Guesstimates on a fair asking price? KBB gives a retail of $4,750 and a trade-in of around $3,400 in Excellent condition. Split the difference and that's $4,075 but the few for sale seem to be much higher. Expected mileage for a 2008 is around 6,500.
May just put it on eBay, that worked OK for a KLR. My old V-Strom sold in one day off Advrider, don't think that's going to happen.
I like twins.....Maybe have to strip the plastics off a DL1000....

The ones for sale may be priced higher but I bet the ones that have SOLD were Under $4k.
Pull off the Penske and sell it separate and the whole thing will be easier.

I'd definitely remove the aftermarket bits were I you, either way. I personally wouldn't pay a penny for your upgrades. And I normally feel a 100% stock example is more desirable.
I haven't been watching SV's, only DL's. But my feel is that the SVs are far, far more common and turn over far more often. Thus I suspect you'll have to undercut everything else on the market to turn a quick sale. I don't think your SV will be near as easy to move as your DL was.
That said, my perception is that you keep your bikes very clean. It is appalling to me how few people do this. And so you may get away with a premium for the cleanliness. I got several comments from the guy who bought mine about how clean my bike was compared to everyone else out there, which surprised the hell out of me as I thought the dings and dents from 10 years of tip-overs and scuffs were embarrassingly awful.
I just looked at a DL1000 the other day that was advertised as clean, but had obviously been crashed. Not tipped over, but no shit crashed. Was an '05 with RUST too. Incredible.
Best of luck.
You may want offer two prices, one with and one without. Lets the buyer know you have that in case he is looking for an upgraded bike.
Sew, I'm riding it today and I don't think I'm going to be able to do laps like this.
Are there any aftermarket peg sets that could be used to move the pegs forward and down? If not I'm probably done with this bike after having ridden it a whopping 600 miles. I'll just break 2,000 on the odo today.

Well, new developments. Apparently Buell XB footpegs can be made to fit and lower the position almost an inch. And SV Racing parts makes a bracket that can be reversed to move the pegs forward and down.
All a slippery slope as my feet are also size 12EE so putting them lower and forward may lead to clearance problems. But that's a good problem to have relative to sitting home....
Gladius but stock pegs:
Buell pegs.

Have you done anything with the subframe yet? The 2003 subframe raises the seat about an inch. Between that and the Buell pegs, you've got another 2 inches of leg room.
If the opportunity presents itself, I can let you try mine out to see if you like it any better.

Would that entail replacing the subframe?
I've got the seat raised quite a bit with the gel seat - would the subframe raise it further? Does it change the location of the pegs?
“It's 2 minutes for any capable adult.”
Yes. Replacing your subframe with one from a 2003 SV would raise the tail & seat, by about an inch.
2004+
If you look at the top front mount (top right in the photo below), you can see how the rail drops down about an inch.
The 2003 doesn't have that drop. It's more like this aftermarket subframe.

Have to go buy a 12mm drill to finish modifying them, but it looks like the Buell XB footpegs wll give me enough room to ride the bike!
MAy even just put one on the left, don't really need it for the right.

go to cycle-ergo.com and compare the sv to the ktm 990 super duke.
