Looked up directions on Google Maps and Map Quest. Google directions use I95 to Richmond and MapQuest uses I81 to Harrisburg. Whats the route that you guys take?
we are going 95 ...
anyone who has made the trip have an opinion of one over the other??

from the directions, I95 is the shorter route. So unless a better way is mentioned. Thats the way I'll be gong too. Just have to contend the GW bridge and DC traffic.
My preferred route would be 81. 95 goes through NYC, Jersey, DC, and Richmond. You're going to hit major traffic in at least 2 out of 5 no matter when you leave.
The only issue with 81 is that you either have to go all the way to roanoke, then south and back track east, or you have to pick a spot to hop over the blue ridge mountains. We hopped over the blue ridge last year, but this approach isn't recommended in the dead of night in humid march as you'll end up driving through a cloud with 5 feet of visibility (sorry Chris, it *looked* like a shortcut).
well two votes for 81 and one for 95.
Honclfibr, when you say longer, you mean distance and time or just distance. If there is less traffic to contend with does that mitigate the difference in distance?
81 sounds the bette rroute. I'm sure traffic on the GW about the time I'll be rolling through would be re-dick-u-lous. Anyone planning on grabbing a hotel part of the way down there tomorrow night? Maybe one near a strip club or a girls gone wild college campus. Me and Nazo are looking to head out around 4 or 5 latest.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
I went to school in western VA (blacksburg, just west of roanoke) and it was faster to take 84 to 81 probably 9 times out of 10. Leaving on a friday morning with the parking lot that is NYC and NJ at that time of day, I can almost guarantee you're better off taking 84 to 81. But again, the difficulty is getting from 81 over to Alton, that will eat up a bit of your time advantage.Originally posted by barfpuke

But as Jane said, the 81 route is just so much more enjoyable, and if you're pulling a trailer your car will thank you to not be in stop and go traffic as well.
I will be pushing for the 84 to 81 route, but I'm not driving so it's not my call. If it was though, you couldn't pay me enough to drive down 95 at that time of a weekday...
Thanks for ya'll adivce. I think I've been sold on 84 to 81. Thanks!
