Here's some of why I ended up choosing the R1:

The R1 produced good HP AND torque, even when compared to a V-twin. V-twins no longer had the luxury of "getting by" with their perceived torque advantage when the I-4s began to produce plenty of leverage down low.
The ZX-10R has a beast of a motor, but I'm growing tired of these things. While it still has what I want, a very flexible power delivery, the close-ratio transmission takes a lot of fun away from riding on the street. I don't need, nor want, to do 100 mph in first gear. As much as I enjoy being able to crack the throttle and have the front end come up at will in the first 3 gears, the speeds that this is happening at is ridiculous around here. The bikes may be designed to kick ass on a track, but some of the flexibilty of the liter bike is lost when it's geared for the track (and to help prevent spodes from looping them out). Yeah, I can shorten the gearing, and increase the overlap for more shifting fun and increased revs on the highway. But the '02 R1 was great in the way you could loft it from a roll in first and snick it into second w/o coming close to nearing triple digits. The R1 was flexible and fun. Some of the fun of the R1 has been displaced by the ZX-10R and its more frantic nature.
