Was the cover on securely?
On my first bike, the previous owner gave me a cover that was over sized... with high winds, it would catch fairly well.
It did fly off on a few occasions...

same thing happened to me... took my cover off and then I think once they saw the massive steel anchor chain and combo lock attached to my bike and then to the apartment buildings gas lines... they thought better of stealing my bike and took the cover...a bike cover and tarp... but not the bike??

I can just imagine the thought process when they see the chain going through the gas line pipes..
"fuck.. a chain... screw that I'll hacksaw that crap!!... wait a sec.... what are these pipes going into the building..? whats that hissing sound?..."
then he realizes that they're the gas lines and then has a mental image of himself cutting the chain, creating sparks and blowing him, the bike and half of the building up... then thinks better of it and walks away... taking my damn walmart cover!!
