So my bike policy was up last Nov. I usually just renew it just in case of good weather in the winter. Been doing this for the last 3-years. So I had a "great" idea to just let the policy expire(its was paid in full),not ride in the winter and just start a new policy in March.BIG MISTAKE, I now know that MA policies automatical renew, now I've been accused of the ulimate insurance sin, policy cancelled due to non-payment. Under this, MA law says when getting a new policy its must be paid in full. So instead of making reasonable monthly payments I now have to pay $1600 for me and my wife's new bike insurance. Plus the sales tax on her bike and whatever other fees at the DMV. Bet its gonna bite me again when my auto policy renews. I can hear my agent now "yep its gonna be $2800 in full please". screw it i just wanna ride...end rant
i might have a tip or two

Move to NH and you won't have to deal with that kind of crap!

But even in NH you can't just stop paying for your insurance without calling and canceling it can you?
That's a big no no. You get flagged as failure to pay and that's why you then have to pay up front in full if you want to be insured.

I don't think that's mass law. I think what screwed you was ignoring the letter asking you to pay your monthly bill.
the auto renew thing got you

Talk to an agent, they have companies that will finance you for the full amount if you need it....
the agent will handle it all and give you the payment.
I was uninsurable for a year and when i was able to get insurance again this is the road i had to take.
If you have a plate it needs to be insured.
Return the plate to the registry and get the canceled plate receipt and you can cancel insurance as of that day.
I got tagged by this way back in the day with my FZR. I sold the bike, handed in my plates, sent in my last month's insurance payment and completely forgot about calling up and actually canceling the policy, so I ended up with non-payment on a bike I sold a month prior.
My pay-in-full was only about $500 though, but perhaps because of your age your policy is so much higher. I ended up just going to a different insurance company and they were more than happy to let me take out a standard policy that wasn't 100% up front.
Advice: Try a different insurance shop.
Explain the situation to them and if they tell you to piss up a rope tell them you are willing to take your money else where. The free market economy doesn't just work for businesses.

I can resist everything but Pete's mom.
I had that happen before... I just paid it in full... But I have a friend that had the same thing happen and he could not afford it... He went to A afordable(sp?) insurance will let you make payments.. It is not a state law... It is the insurance companies refusing.. They group themselves together.. So some will refuse you some will not..
