So I posted up a little while ago that I have unfortunately let my bike sit idle for quite a long time and it now needs some work to get back on the street. Its a 2000 GSXR600 and the battery is completely dead just to start. I'm guessing it probably needs the gas drained and maybe the carbs cleaned out but I am certainly no mechanic so I need to take it somewhere for some love.
A guy on the gixxer.com board has pm'd me and said he runs a shop out of his garage in a town close to mine. He is a long time member over there and seemingly reputable but since I don't actually know this guy I'm hesitant about the whole gig.
I'm in a serious tight spot for cash (getting married in 10 months, paying for it all myself, and I just got a $1k bill for a few med bills) but I'm dying to get the bike back in good riding shape. Its also going to need new tires before I really put it to use.
What do you guys think about using the guy off the forum? His occupation is listed as bike mechanic and he has thousands of posts etc. I'm just nervous.
What is he proposing to charge you?

If he has a good reputation from more people than his immediate family
chances are he would be fine.
If you are not sure... I would pass. It is never a good thing to go into a business dealing without confidence that he knows what he is doing. I you need to feel more secure see if he is insured so you could sue him if you are not happy.
That would probably end any conversations about work but if you are unsure you should find someone you do trust.
i'd find someone that can help/teach you to do that stuff. just my thoughts.

Holy crap! Someone from Summit is in a serious tight spot for cash?Had a nice meal there recently at a place called Winberie's. Seems like a really nice town.
Sounds like the work is pretty straight forward. I say read a bunch of his technical posts and see if he gets flamed for being a dumbass, if not, go for it.
Well the guy definitely seems to know what he's talking about mechanically. I havent talked to him about prices or anything yet but that is the real factor for me even considering it.
Yes, some people who live in Summit are crunched for money. Some of us are in our 20's, live in a two family house that is not one of the mansions, and are paying for our own weddings. Winberries is decent food but there are a ton of good places to eat. I only live a few blocks from there.
