I want my street bike (2003 R1) to have reverse shifting like my race bike, But I don't really want to spend $400 on aftermarket rearsets to set it up for GP shifting.
Any ideas on how to get GP shifting while using my stock foot pegs??
My Yamaha dealer had no ideas.

As far as I know, it cant be done because the shift rod goes through the frame.
There are a used set of Attack rearsets on the LRRS site.
weld on a suicide shifter!

I know it's a newer model, but I saw an 04' R1 where the owner fliped the lever on the shift shaft and bent the shift rod after the frame to meet up with the lever.
AHHHHHHHH, I found the link.......

It's crude, but I guess it worked for him.![]()
Dang! You got shocks, pegs... lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?
AWESOME!
thanks By-Tor, thats actually exactly what I was thinking of doing.
I have an extra shift rod from my '02 R1 too in case it looks super ghetto I can put the original back on.
I got a project tonight![]()

I've seen that shift mod done before, just be sure the shift rod is at or as close to a 90 degree angle from the shift lever. It'll make the shifts easier and smoother![]()
Yamaha
and use something w/ a big diameter to bend it around so the bend is nice & wide... dont want the bend to be all in one spot, it could weaken it

I give myself an "A" For Effort
but a "F" for executing it.
Bending the shift rod works for the '04's but not the '03's
there is no way to use the stock parts and be able to flip the shifter connection at the transmission.
I may have have to just buy a sweet set of rearsets afterall,
this is a good way of me justifying the purchase.
Oh Well, Thanks for the help anyways.

Should of bought an RC....very easy mod...COSTS $39.00
Too bad for you!![]()
What exactly kept you from doing the modification?
I'm only asking because my brother has an 03' R1 and I told him that you were going to try this mod.

If you flip the rod connector 180 degree's it will hit the frame.Originally posted by By-Tor

There is not alot of room in this area.
I'll have to check out how the aftermarket rearsets are engineered.

Yeah an RC would of solved my GP shift problem, but then I'd have to find a way to make the bike fast.....Originally posted by skiierx

i know it can be done on 98-01 R1' s. Im not sure about the 03's but i would guess it can be done as well.
i have seen it on r1-forum.com do a search there.
i have seen it done a few different ways. I think grave's sells the shift rod already bent too.
Thanks Nazo, I'll have to look at my brother's bike.
I'll let you know if I came up with anything.

Maybe it didn't seem fast to you when you rode one but something tells me it is quite fast!Originally posted by Nazo

How is/was the R1 in Superbike racing?
I forgot how touchy the RC owners get about their bike.
Just being a ball buster Jaimie.
I'm gonna be on a 600 all season anyway.
Have fun at the gap!

I am just toying with you as well! You should be able to throw a 600 around like it is nothing! Enjoy
