yup, T/Rs have a lot to do w/ bleeding off speed on landing... as do flaps / spoilers... but the brakes (and, therefore the tires) are a big part of dragging those hundreds of tons moving at significant velocity to a halt.

I don't claim to be an expert on all the details of this... but I do know that... even after 15-20 min. of taxiing... big jet tires are hot (not just warm) to the touch...

    hey

If anyone in Beantown is interested in doing a day ride up there to check it out but not stay over (and possibly check out the Kangamanky Hwy?), I'd be interested...

pretty much a guarantee that there's gonna be at least a coupla rides that include the Kang during the season... but I understand that Bike Week ain't the time for fully enjoying it.

from what I hear, that whole area is clotted w/ slo-motion cruisers (in addition to the usual summer complaints) for that week... might wanna go some time when the traffic's less & the fun is more

    yeah

It's clearly more of a cultural experience than a shred the tires type event, but I'm all for people watching once in a while...

And thanks to silver Surfer I've got this great new route up and back...

The Wing flappes are used for drag and is a major contributor to the braking of planes No, really it's true..

we-e-ell... as I understand it: during take-off / landing / low speed operation, flaps extend the effective length of the wing chord, increasing lift. after landing-- in conjunction w/ the wing spoilers (on aircraft so equipped)-- they disrupt the airflow over & under the wing and introduce a greater drag component... kinda like a two-sided air brake.

'course, I ain't no aeronautical engineer... and AF pilots have been known to talk outright bullshit... ... so this may very well not be true

(which would prolly serve me right for convincing them that their nav aids went wonky as a result of fluctuations in the Van Allen radiation belts... )
