APRILIA - 850 MANA
Yes, that's integrated helmet storage.... and right side chain drive.... and a direct no-linkage, offset rear shock. Couple that w/ Aprilia's own V4 that's in testing right now & I'd say they're definitely taking a different approach on some things.
EDIT: 2/7/08
A review from some guy in the UK on another forum.
What a blast! Coolest scoot I've ever ridden! Once you've got used to the lack of a clutch lever it is grintastic! It has 3 maps that you can change between on the move depending on your mood. We have Rain mode, Touring mode and Sport mode. But to be honest, hooning around North London, touring mode was the best, the sport mode just adds a bit of whoooomphh, or va va voom!
It can be ridden as a totally automatic or you can go up or down gears at will via the foot switch ala a 'normal' bike or the + or - buttons on the bar where the clutch lever should be. The gear changes are smooth as silk.
The bike has a false fuel tank which lifts up with enough space for a full face lid. If I were comuting in London regularly I would definitely get one. The seat is super comfy and the sit up and beg bars are ideal for commuting mode. The only downer is the price, a hefty £6,300.

Oh yeah, anyone notice the "missing clutch lever"?
Guess I forgot to mention the electronically controled sequential CVT style 7 ratio transmission... Choose Auto (with three mappings... touring, sport or rain) or Manual (change via pedal or hand control).

It's a fucking automatic!
Have you seen that stunter show on SPEED, "Super Bikes!"? Jason Britton has now got a Tuono for his parking lot antics.
No clutch lever = free hand for cell phone use. I'd say Aprilia is ahead of the curve on this one.
ok...giving the automatic option...while i think its rediculous...i can understand
but at least give us a damn clutch to use if we want to
other than that....HOT!!!

I have cvt on my Burgman
Pulls a little on fast idle but other then that its great
Only use manual if going into a set of known turns that are better in 1 gear.
If you panic break it gets stuck in a high ratio until a few seconds go by.
with the storage plus it probably is supposed to be a commuter so auto is the way to go
Glen Beck is John the Baptist
it's a commute killer/city fun bike, not a frikkin sportbike canyon carver, people!

That's fine, but I still don't see why a commuter bike needs an automatic transmission. I have no trouble whatsoever shifting a manual transmission (on a bike or in a car) in any kind of traffic. And frankly, as Burnham pointed out, an automatic transmission on a bike just seems like an invitation for distracting behavior. Riding a motorcycle (especially in city traffic) is dangerous enough as it is -- in my opinion it's better for the rider to stay focused on the operation of his/her bike, and being required to think about shifting helps to accomplish that. Take away that task, and it's easier for the mind to begin wandering and for focus to shift to things like, yes, using a cell phone.

Perhaps by offering an automatic option they are trying to gain a larger market-share? They would then be appealing to the person who doesn't want to have to pay attention while driving. I can see it now -- someone talking on their phone while riding or drinking coffee.
...... damn conspiracy theorists.....
It's fuckin technological advancement... i could care less about WHY they did it, it's about HOW they did it![]()

anniversary edition -> "I want to pretend my R6 is unique, but in the end I paid more for a decal" betch!:
Back to the CVT, I think it takes away from the purist side of motorcycling. Those who don't want to shift probably shouldn't be on a bike. Actually they don't deserve to be on one.
Supa Motarded! If you see me backin it in, keep watching...Im about to crash
Zip Tie Alley #237
ok I take that back about little girls...they deserve better
but its for people who dont know motorcycles
and really need a scooter.
If you want a cool naked, I'd get one of these
and run circles around that automatic.

If you want automatic get a Goldwing.
Pete I think your new purchase has warped you sensibility !

yeah, lets ban all mini-bikes & motorcycles w/ semi-auto transmissions. And scooters while we're at it... and mopeds... and quick shifter kits and slipper clutches since those make shifting easier... cuz those people w/ those things don't deserve to be riding. Hey, I bet all the people that ride those do it so they can talk on their cell phones while they're goin down the road.
u know... while they're wearing a helmet.
Did I say I wanted one? No. I just admire the development of the technology.

I support this proposed ban on fiddles. And would like to propose a further ban on ukeleles. God those things are annoying.
