Barend mirrors are just fine though, they actually work better than most stock mirrors and I have though about going to them myself. your mirrors are the first thing to break when you drop your bike anyways.
This is why I always try to use hand signals when merging with other traffic or if there is some one behind me. they can't miss your big ol arm going out the side... well you would hope not!)
Mine do not glow like these ones but they do have the led blinkers on them

I've broken 3-4 turn signals, a couple brake/clutch levers, and one shift lever in the last 17 or so years. But I've never broken a mirror. Not yet anyway.
But yeah, I agree: bar end mirrors work just fine.
I am convinced that the traffic I ride with wouldn't know what the hell I am doing if I were to use hand signals.
I never use mirrors. I usually take them off. If I am on the street usually nothing is coming up behind me anyways..meh.

My old bike(500r) had crappy mirrors so I fixed it not by replacing the mirrors, but by adding another set. I was rocking stock mirrors for my side blind spot, and bar ends to see further down the road behind me. Worked pretty well. I also dropped the bike trying to pull it backwards out of my driveway and one of the bar mirrors broke off, with no other damage to the bike.
Now I've just got the bar ends and they work pretty good accept everything looks really small and far away in them. I can imagine it being a problem for someone like my wife who has horrible vision. I'm still 100% stock(no contacts glasses etc 20/20 at minimum) in the eye department though.
