    auxillary gas tank.. cool idea

So one of the guys in my office complex is an iron butt fan and is planning a 13K in 13 days ride. ( or there abouts I don't remember the exact info ) I got into work today and saw this contraption on his Honda. I haven't had a chance to talk to him yet. I am not sure what the bungi cord is, but it is securely bolted to the bike it's filtered and has a vent tube off the back. I can't wait to talk to him. I think it's pretty neat.

Pretty cool, seems like an adaptation of a dirt bike style aux tank. I never got the whole iron butt thing though, what's fun about slabbing 13000 miles in 13 days or coast to coast in 48 hours etc.??

Is it really that much of a detriment to stop every 250 miles to fill up for 45 seconds?

I don't know that it's for me either, but it's certainly cooler than strapping on a doo rag and parking on the strip.

I'm with Chipper on this. I was looking at it from a 'this is pretty neat and nicely done' kind of angle. I can appreciate good craftsmanship.

Re: auxillary gast tank.. cool idea

Yeah, I don't get the Iron Butt thing either. I'd rather ride fun, scenic roads, which do not lend themselves to the kinds of average speeds necessary to cover 1000 miles in a day.

On the other hand, I also don't like to stop for gas. I'd love to get the 9ish-gallon Safari tank for my Tiger, but I don't feel like shelling out nearly $1000 for it. It's always interesting to see what people come up with to extend their range.

13k in 13 days... that's nuts. I wonder what he does about a tire change mid-trip.

wishful thinking of an impossible task

I have found every fuel stop is 15 minutes off pace, takes time to slow down get off exit, go to gas station, return to highway and back up to speed

IBA rules require a stop every 350 miles or less

those who don't understand the enjoyment of endurance riding never will

I think its stupid to pay money to go to a track and go roundy round the same 12 turns all day with 20 other riders exploring their limits

    I like this aux tank

We'll get you out there some day, Randy, and I bet you'll have fun in spite of yourself. Just like many of us might on an IB, in spite of ourselves.

depending on the route maybe 250 isn't an option?

doubtfull, went to the drags once, left after only 3 runs, If I were to share the track with only 3-4 other riders, maybe for a few laps, and I'd still prolly leave early

    fast is not my thing

when I did my BBG (1500mi in 24hrs or less) I recorded a top speed of only 82mph, and average speed of 66.9mph (rolling average 73.3mph)

fwiw, cross country highways are more scenic than most surface roads

I can see your point about the on/off's for gas and pace. I was thinking more about my commute vs fastest distance.

This morning for me was under a minute. Thank you Mobile Speedpass and not having to get off the bike..... and I get about 250 before the light starts blinking on the Wee. Probably get 275 or more if I really try.....

I've done the long distance thing now. Down to mid PA in one shot only stopping for lunch. Not bad, but a very different type of fun than track days or Deal's. I like both. I ain't haytin on either.

I wonder why nobody just uses a small car fuel cell instead of a custom made rig?

They are cheap, robust and already done up properly.

Probably for lack of mounting options. The fuel cell is nothing but a welded metal box, so why not go fully custom if you already cannot mount a pre-built unit.

Actually I think a better solution for the hardcore long distance/speed run riders would be saddlebox style dual tanks.

some riders to buy generic fuel cells

part of reason for custom fuels cell is IBA rules and maximizing your capacity to a total of 11.5 gallons, for instance if I bought a 5 gallon cell for my V-strom it would only get me to 10.8

I dunno, I've done just under 1000 miles in a day ( 970 miles in 19hrs) my house to finger lakes & back, no highway, and about 200 miles were gravel. I did not consider that ride LD. Before I did my BBG, I did a "training ride" to calibrate my pace and check fuel economy at speed. Left my house 1am, rode to NJ for breakfast then to my dads house in VT for lunch, 722 miles in 10hrs

my BBG from Portsmouth, NH to Joplin MO took 23:05, everything went according to plans, probably spent 80 hours on computer researching the ride, modifying route, planning fuel stops

Do the opposite; show up late. Last sessions of the day seem to be pretty close to what you are wishing for, in my experience.

I don't have a lot of experience with drag racing.. and some here will argue I don't have a lot of track time either. But track days are nothing like drags, IMO. Nothing at all.

Probably as similar as Iron Butting vs a guided tour through Americade or something..

Clayton, you should be able to milk 300 out of that 'strom. I can.

Some guys on the FJR site have customized fuel tanks. The extend them up and widen them to around 10 gallons. They don't look too horrible but are definitely big.

I just completed a 'test' run on Friday. 764 miles. Out the door at 3:30 am and home by 11:00 pm. It included a stop for a sit down lunch and a few hours at Epping to see Top Fuel qualifying. I think I am now a LD addict and I have been planning some new trips already.

Saddlesore 1000 can be done with relatively little planning, average 50mph and you get it done with 4 hours to spare. BBGs are much more intense, especially east of Mississippi where speed limits are lower. IBA might not issue certificate if you had to speed to get it
